Interview with:A. Jarrell Hayes [ajhbooks]
WRITING
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write? I try to clear my head of distractions before I write. I take a few minutes to meditate and focus on the task of writing before I sit in front of my computer.
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person? Third person. I find it more flexible.
What well known writers do you admire most? Terry Brooks, J.R.R. Tolkein, Gene Wolfe, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Billy Collins.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force? In my novellas and novels I frequently have animal characters that talk. I've come to realize this is some way of coping with my unfulfilled childhood dream of becoming a zoologist.
Does reader feed-back help you? I find reader feed-back indispensable. Readers read what they like to read. My goal is to sell more books, always, so finding out what my readers are looking for and delivering works. Reader feed-back helps me to narrow down my target audience based on aesthetics. It helps my future writing to find out what my readers like and dislike about my style.
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process? I write on my computer. For shorter works like poetry and short fiction, I correct on my computer. For longer works, I print them out and correct them that way.
What are you working on now? I'm currently working on a poetry chapbook, a fantasy novel about the relationship between gods and humans, and a collection of short fiction and poetry.
What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone? Revisit the writing. Even for the writing that you don't think is publishable as a whole, more than likely there are some gems within to extract and use for current or future projects.
