A.J.Kurtz [ajkurtz83]

WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
Wow, I don't think I can recall the first book. I do remember reading R.L.Stine's Goosebumps books. I enjoyed those. I've been writing off and on my entire life. The first people to read what I wrote were my mom and my grandmother.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
My most favorite is science fiction. http://amzn.com/1475142706
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
I like to have at least my out line finished and some of the backround on the characters.
What type of reading inspires you to write?
I have inspiration that comes from many places.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story?
Compelling characters. If they're not interesting then the story is bland. Also a great concept that noone has done before. Be different, stand out and don't be scared to try new things.
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
First person point of view because you know exactly how the person is feeling and thinking. This brings the reader closer to the character.
What well known writers do you admire most?
Stephen King
What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours?
I think it helps when the character has flaws. I make sure my characters have plenty.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
Sure
Deep down inside, who do you write for?
I write for myself. I never write for others. If that were the case nobody would ever be happy.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force?
I believe that it can be a sort of therapy. Yes internal conflicts do come out in writing.
Does reader feed-back help you?
Feedback in any form is helpful.
Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
Yes and not yet.
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust?
I don't share on paper. However I have shared my idea with a trusted friend.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for?
Right now at this point I'm still searching.
What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?
I try not to over do it. At the moment I'm working on three books at the same time. I have no set time for them to be done. I want them to be the best they can. If I'm in a rush to get it done, the book could turn out pretty crappy. I have a more laid back style going into writing my books. I make certain that I do write everyday.
What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
One my desk I have my laptop computer, pictures of books and book signings I've already done, pictures of my girls. I keep it simple.
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process?
Sometimes I write by hand, especially when my computer is on the fritz. Otherwise I'm on the computer. There are times I print chapters out, correct and then go back in and edit.
What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information?
Facebook,Twitter and my blog
What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on the last two books of The Darkness Saga. I'm also writing a scifi/fantasy kind of book.
