Interview with:

Andry Lie [andrylie]

ENTREPRENEUR
What is the business idea that you are working on right now? How did you come up with it?
Setting up a local dance company [1st one in my country].
The idea was suggested by one of the most prominent choreographer in Indonesia.
Is there a website, blog or social media link where we can see more about your project and/or yourself?
Currently not yet - website/blog/soc med are one of the tools we are using. We are not at that stage.
What is your professional background? What were you doing before?
Sales and Marketing. I have completed the cycle of pre-sales, sales and aftersales in 12 years of my professional career.
How did the entrepreneurial spirit rise up in you? Were you exposed to entrepreneurship in your family or your social environment when you were a child?
Yes, personal experience - I don't like to work for others, I think it is best to be able to provide jobs for others. My family were professionals. Completely from books and audio book I listened to. And seminars I attend to.
Do you have partners working with you on this? How do you split the work with them?
I do have partners. We have divided the works within 5 of us based on our strength, workload and interest. Measured meticulously and defined properly to ensure professionalism later on. We keep in mind that later on this job desc we are doing now will be done by someone else. We better be at least have some knowledge of it.
Describe your business plan as briefly and simply as possible.
Indonesia does not have a dance company ever. Performance arts have never been viewed as a way of living nor as a profitable business while those who are travelling actually enjoy seeing any broadway show: the Nutcrackers, the Lion King, the Blackswan... etc

We are preparing a company to provide high quality dancers in the following area:
- Classical, Neo-Classical and Contemporary Dances
- Traditional Dance
- Hip Hop / Modern Dance
- Stylized [fusion of both]

The revenue streams: performance, corporate shows, endorsement, sponsorships, merchandise, books, etc
What have you achieved up to now? What have you yet to achieve?
Developing and shapening the vision.
Now there are 7 of us including 2 professional dancers [choreographers], 2 business women in entertainment industry.

We need to utilize and focus more. Since all are part timers, need to settle for full timers.
Are you looking for investors? What are you offering in exchange for what?
Yes we do. 2 types of investors:
- For dance company
- For our special performances

For the Dance Company:
- Profit sharing
- A few other perks that I am currently unable to share

For Special Performances:
- Branding
- Special treatments
- etc
Do you have employees or people that you outsource tasks to? What do they do?
Not yet but we will.
Entrepreneurs have a reputation as "control freaks." How do you avoid that?
We build the business focusing on leadership. Business has to be profitable - however:
We use the business to build people up as well - not the other way around.

When all brains and hearts in the organization contribute towards one vision - it's a powerful force to build a momentum.
How do you balance work with relaxation?
3 things that will help balancing life:
- Vision: we know where we are going
- Priority: we know what it will cost us
- Commitment: we follow our costing properly and ready to make adjustment along the way

We put our goals on stone and plan on sands
What is your main motivation: being your own boss, adventure and discovery, getting rich, doing good for others, or is there something else?
To be significant for my God my family.
What do you think of big corporations? Would you work for one?
Big corporations are big organizations. We do need to learn how to run an organization with their level of leadership and complexity. I would work for one.
Describe two moments of maximum fear and maximum satisfaction that you have lived through in your business adventure.
Maximum fear:
Losing is OK as long as there are lessons learned. However sometimes the impact is more than anticipated due to unexpected factors: your partners bail out, etc

Maximum satisfaction:
When I am able to provide more success and presented to my team that it was their success.
When you need guidance or advice, where do you find it?
As much as I liked to say: the Bible.... [which I believe I supposed to]:
- My wife
- Friends and wise counsels
- Books
Up to what point is luck is important? How do you attract it?
The harder I work, the luckier I get. Luck comes with 2 things:
- Preparation
- Opportunity

I can only make my self prepared... when the opps come - that's luck.
And opps only can be acknowledged by those who are ready.
What do you do to maintain morale and continue persevering in low times?
My God, my wife, Godly counsels, books
They are in that order - seriously! I'm not trying to be religious.
Which well known entrepreneurs/enterprises do you admire? Why?
Business is about a relationship. People don't buy your product because of their needs alone. Try to piss people off, they can go to your competitors.

Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel...

At one point they lost their business, together with the 3rd investor. They buy back the other party shares to ensure that he did not bear lost and they did. I would be honored to conduct a business venture with these fine gentlemen.
What other types of businesses are you frequently tempted by?
Hmm... nothing.
Are these times of crisis good for beginning a business?
Yes. Make sure the crisis doesn't go wasted. It's the best time to learn.
How important have PR and social media been for you?
Very important. Just like a sword - if you are a skillful swordsman, it'll be a powerful weapon. If you are a lousy one [like me hahahaha....] it'll endanger your life.

Social Media is like an amplifier of who you are. If you are a good person - it will be amplified. And the other way around.
What would you call success? Where would you like your business to be five years from now?
For me, success happens when I can see other people reach their success. 5 years from now, the business has taken-off and flew people to where they never dream before.
What skills would you advise a want-to-be-entrepreneur to acquire?
To be a successful business person you need to be a people person.
Foundation: Interpersonal skills
Building blocks: Technical skills

Don't worry about building blocks if you don't have the foundation right. As I mentioned somewhere before [this is a quite lengthy interview - my apology for my short answers]: business is about relationship.

A good saying: relationship is the new currency.
