Interview with:

Leslie Zabel [beimondi]

ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I'm an artisan jeweler. I create mini pieces of art to wear combining metals like copper, silver, and brass with gemstones, lampwork glass, and natural elements.
Your biography in four lines.
My true love has to be copper. What a beautiful metal! I would be happy spending my days twisting, turning, hammering, the metal. I'm finally doing what I love, creating little pieces of art to wear. Now I'm enjoying a life filled with beautiful colors and amazing ideas. This is my own Beautiful World!
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
My website is www.beimondi.com I also have pictures of all my items on flickr. Search for the name leslie@beimondi. I also have a blog. http://beimondi-leslie.blogspot.com/
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Nature is the best inspiration for me. I get most of my ideas while walking through the park or taking a late night stroll under the stars. There are so many textures, colors, and shapes just right out your back door.
What is art?
Art is anything you find creative and beautiful!
When do you get your best ideas?
Usually when I try to fall asleep at night. My mind wonders and that's when I'm able to let go and become creative. The problem is remembering that idea the next morning.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
My friends and family usually help me out with that. Sometimes a project can be "overdone" and you have to consider the "less is more" aspect. When I go overboard with a project, my family can usually set me straight and let me know that I should scale things back a bit.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
I don't think an artist can reinvent themselves everyday. But reaching for new goals and broadening your horizons is always a smart thing to do. You might find you enjoy something completely different than what you originally were doing. Plus, this just adds to your knowledge of new techniques and styles.
Is art necessary?
Yes, of course. There are some many different avenues for art and allowing expression through those will not only help the artist but everyone who perceives the art.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
Art is a feeling. Your soul guides you to the next step. Artists learn to let this lead them in the right direction. Each piece of art is the artist's thoughts where the rest of us can see them.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
I love making custom pieces. Customers usually ask for something they haven't already seen somewhere else. This is where the creativity comes into play. I'm able to play with new styles that maybe I wouldn't have considering trying before.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy?
I love blogging! It's a connection between you and the world. I've met people from France, the UK, Ireland, and all over the USA by blogging. And it's wonderful to see their style compared to your own.
