Interview with:

Benzu Kachchhi [benzujk]

ARCHITECTURE
What is your specialization in architecture?
I am an Architecture Student. You know how vast this field of Architecture is. It encompasses everything including residential and commercial designs, industrial design, landscape design, highrise buildings, low-cost housing, Villas, Mansions, Apartments, Shopping Malls, Movie theatres, Amusement parks and everything else which contributes to enhancing the environment you live in.
Is there a web page or blog where one could see something of your work?
I have a couple of blogs which I designed as a hobby. See http://www.architecture-student.com/ Architecture Students Blog covers latest trends in Architecture, Student Portfolios & Case Studies, Sustainable Development, Green Architecture, Unconventional Landscapes, Post-Modern Art, Construction Management & Biographies of Great Architects of yesteryear. Also, I have created http://www.civilprojectsonline.com/ Civil Projects blog covers mega civil engineering construction projects, Advanced structural designs, Massive Underground structures, Design of Steel and RCC Structures, towers, Geodesic domes, Gothic vaults, offshore & marine structures and other important projects.
What is it for you a good architectural design?
I don't like all the bells and whistles a supposed "good design" should have. I follow the Howard Roark principle -- Keep it Simple, blend into the natural environment so that the building adds to the environment instead of taking away the natural beauty.
What era of architecture most fascinates you?
The 60s and 70s produced some of the best Architects of our times, and some real awesome classics. These days, all we have is corporations fighting to cut costs and maximize profits. There is no longer that zeal in the profession of Architecture as it used to be...
List the name of a famous building which you don't care for.
Not one building, but I can name a city which I hate with a passion. Dubai - The city built by slaves. I really hate it.
What hardware and software do you use that you deem as indispensable?
A decent computer with a good graphics card. I suggest a cheap Core i3 processor, 4GB Ram and an AMD 4770 Graphics card. You could get it all for less that $300. For the software, I like AutoCAD, though it is not as efficient as all the new ones like Chief Architect and Archicad.
In which city do you live or work and why?
I live in the city of Hyderabad, in India. After completing my education, I would love to migrate to UK or Canada.
Do you work with other architects? How is the team set up?
I don't really work. See my blogs http://www.architecture-student.com/ and http://www.civilprojectsonline.com/
What do you think of competitions? What types of competitions do you normally compete in?
Competitions are an important opportunity to showcase your skills to the world. But the reality is that the winners are chosen in a very opaque way. So, if you don't know people in high places, there is no way in hell you could ever win a competition.
Which websites about architecture do you frequently visit?
Architecture Students Blog - http://www.architecture-student.com/ Civil Engineering Projects - http://www.civilprojectsonline.com/ Life of an Architect - http://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/ Design Magazine - http://www.dezeen.com/
