Interview with:Brenda Hofreiter [brendah]
ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I paint "en plein air" landscapes in oil, or oil landscapes created on location.
What is your message? The natural world is part of us and understanding and interacting with it is part of our humanity.
Your biography in four lines. Brenda Hofreiter is US artist and a 4th generation Floridian who has been painting professionally and winning awards since 1999. She is a Signature Member if IPAP, AIS, and PAF, and a member of OPA, SMI and LAI.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
What is art? A painting becomes "art" when the viewer has an emotional reaction to what is painted. Essentially, the viewer completes and joins with the artist in the creation of "art".
When do you get your best ideas? When sitting in front of an awe inspiring landscape.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? I started seeing myself as an artist during my Fellowship at Crealde' School of Art. It was during a drawing class and I was working on a homework assignment for a self-portrait. It was the first time I went into the "zone". When I came out of it and looked at the work I had created, it was as if someone else had done it. I started to cry and I realized that I had been an "artist" all of my life and never knew it until now.
Is art necessary? No. Art is never "necessary" for survival. It just makes living a little less lonely and more lovely.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? Since my art really feels like a part of me, it used to be. Now, I content myself with the thought that it is giving someone else the same joy that it's creation gave me. Besides, selling it makes room for the next creation.
