Brenda Obregon [brendaobregon]

PHOTOGRAPHY
For how long have you done photography? How did you begin?
I really dont remember when was the first time I took a camera. But do remember that since I was a little girl, I enjoyed watching over and over again at books about wildlife, especially books about horses. I also loved to flip through magazines that my aunt used to buy and see the people in them. Although the images were flat, to me seemed they full of movement. All was beautiful. But it was until I was in highschool (i was like 15 years old) that I have my first camera, (My mom bought it to me for Christmas because she saw that I spent loth of my time taking pictures with my cellphone), it was a Canon Powershot A640 in Black Color :D My first true LOVE ;D "To make a moment to live forever" Thats what i said at that time and still in my mind today. I didnt have a specific idea of what I wanna to "make live forever". At that time I used to play at the "Youth Symphony Orchestra of the of Chiapas" (i could have ended as a musician xD) And the people around me was very... INTERESTING. So I started taking pictures of people and objects surrounding these people. For some reason, they seemed more real in the photos than "in real life".
What has been your education as a photographer?
With my new camera (the Canon PowerShot A640) my mom took me to a trip. We stayed with a family to spend these summer holidays. The family had a son who had studied visual arts and had specialized in photography. He had a photo-studio and during the week we were with them, he taught me the basics skills with the camera and introduced me to the photo editing in photoshop. Really, I couldn´t believe how much you can actually change and edit the characteristics of a person or other things. I would never believe in anything or anyone unless I saw it with my OWN eyes. LOL (Just kidding) Since that day, I started reading books, magazines, web tutorials, and everything about photo, edition and manipulation. So when I finally have my own "very pro camera" I can say i knew what did I have in my hands... hahahaha. Today Im studying Visual Arts at college, and yep... my major is going to be Photography. :D

Please list any awards for your work.
Mmm... About awards... I have never encouraged to participate in any contest or something. FAIL FOR ME! The works I've done, the jobs where Ive been, the places where it has led me or to expose my pieces at certain galleries (key points) is a great achievement indeed. But something that I feel really proud of is this: http://h4ruh1m3.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=hime#/d26lrf1 I took that photo about 2 years ago. Even if the Daily Daviation is not for me... it was my photo! And I could not be more amazed and happier ever! :D Be Proud of what you have done, cuz it has take you HERE. TO THIS SPECIFIC MOMENT. BTW To see must of my work http://www.flickr.com/photos/brendaobregon
What is your favourite type of photography?
I cant really go for just one... but in this case i could say is People-Portraits. Just like i said befeore. People are very interesting in itself. And also enjoy Nature-Wildlife Photography. Exploring animals through the lens is even more ... curious. ^^
What do you try to express through your photography?
To express.... this is kind of hard, really hard. The photograph, like many other arts, is an ongoing exploration, which seeks not lead to a goal, leads to experimentation. It's like the utopian description of happiness (sorry if not everyone agrees with this.) You realize that happiness is not a goal is a process. I think that what you express is something that you keep for you many of the times, away from what it people feel. And the "Ultimate Master Goal" is to make the bridge between you, your work and the people. And make them belive in it. To make them see, watch, look, feel what you already do. I am in the persuit of getting people to look to themself, in my photos and not only when the look at the mirrow. "I want to express so many things"
How do you choose your subjects?
Normally we call this inspiration, even in a "desk job", you can find it as freedom of creation. For me, its not really something that just pops of my mind one they and the next Im working on it. Is an accumulation of things and factors that I live daily. It can be from something iconic to something special and particular, or just a necessity.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
First of all (and I am NOT joking at all) Check if my camera battery is 100% fully loaded!!! Check everything else and Im ready for the kill... For me the pre-creation of an image or a photo is very important. Everything begins as a concept, an amorphous image rounds in my head over and over again. Sometimes I take pencil, paper, colors, watercolors and other more traditional tools to make sketches. Yes, sketches! Always helpful. After all, it will depend of the moment. You can not control everything. But you must always decide whats in the photo. About wild animals, I always mentalizing with a calm and patient attitude. Nature always go with her own flow, you know? So take your camera, be careful and wait for the miracle. If you breath and walk, it will happen. :D
Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow?
As suggested in previous comments, can be both.
Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma, Olympus, Sony, Pentax...which do you place your bets on and why?
Im not in to a "This camera is better than that". But by the moment Im in to Canon and it works perfect for me. :]
Describe your current equipment: cameras, lenses, computers, accessories...
Eos Canon Rebel Xsi Lens: 18 - 55, 75 - 300, 18 -200. Tripod. Laptop (with Photoshop CS5 installed) Thats in general what I need and the most helpful.
What software and plug-ins do you use to retouch and manage your photos?
I use... almost everything in the Adobe Master Collection CS5. But what everybody need to start maybe is... Photoshop and Lightroom.
What measures do you take to protect your work against Internet piracy?
When you upload a photo to internet you do it knowing all the risks involved. But you have to present your work. I had a problem only once, and I could fix it. I always put a watermark, the upload never raise in the maximum resolution. I put the photos on a low-standar quality. If the website has the option to refuse the download, active this option. Always put the copyright, register your work before you upload to any site or even before showing it to someone (you never know) and of course never give to anyone your originals! Remember your work is your son!
Are you a good salesperson of your work? In what should you improve?
I think that in many cases, you do not know to estimate the value of their work and ended up giving to anyone, what it shouldnt be. Time and effort you put into it and this should be rewarded. I am currently working in an advertising agency where I get paid per session, photo retouching, restoration and other things. And is not going too bad. When it comes to being a "freelance", payment will compensate for time, transfer, used equipment, travel expenses, and everything you need to ensure that the customer is satisfied. Sure, NEVER ABUSE!
Which past masters of photography do you most admire?
Two names: PATRICK DEMARCHELIER and ANNIE LEIBOVITZ.
Are technology and digital retouching reducing the gap between professionals and amateurs?
Both are resources such as photographers we have a responsibility to master both. Being dogmatic is like being nationalist / chauvinist: IT SUCKS!
Do you consider yourself more technical or more artistic?
Can not be both?
What have you learned about the art of framing and composition?
Many of my teachers have said to me that I have a "natural eye for photography, and other arts" However, this does not take away the responsibility or weight in my shoulders. The study is always good. As I said before, this is an ongoing experiment. You dont need to be a genius, or a photographer in this case, to Not Know What Does Not fit in to a picture! Simple! Thats where you begin.
How does one develop the instinct of knowing when to press the shutter release button?
It comes to you. (Ive already talked about this hahahahaha.... )
When should one use film, and when should one use digital?
I was born in the 90s... And know both, the traditional and the iGeneration way. But i think you gotta work with what "the time you live" is giving you!
Does photography have the recognition that it should have in contemporary art museums?
The museums is where the art stays to die. We can not think that museums are the only places to exhibit. Museums should not be criticizing if your work is good or bad. Photography has recognition all around the world! If you think that photography has not the recognition that it should have in contemporary art museums, you mind is too small and square like a empty box!
Is there any particular technique that you could share?
Nopoe. We are living in an age where we can all be omniscient beings. Let us be!
