Interview with:

Briana Martinez [brianamartinez]

ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I am a painter and a writer but above all I like to create change in the things I come into contact with. I seek to nurture something out of nothing.
What is your message?
find yourself through the things you create.
Your biography in four lines.
Briana Martinez, born and raised in California currently living in raleigh, North Carolina. She has been painting for fifteen years and exhibiting her work for seven. She enjoys acrylic and spraypaint to convey a myriad of emotions.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
Yes. Brianamariamartinez.blogspot.com and myspace.com/braina
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
It depends on the day. Everyday life is an inspiration. Usually I just paint the backround and look to see what sort of images the random brushstrokes and paint drips have created.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
not much. I like hands on. I like paint.
What is art?
experience and creation. the way that a person views the world will always be filtered by their mind and when it gets recreated by their hands, that is art.
When do you get your best ideas?
when I experience any intensity of emotion.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
I do not know if I have learned how to do that. Mostly I just depend on my friends whose artistic opinion I respect.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
The three I have not created yet.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
I do not remember a time when I did not. I always knew I was weird.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
we are emotional. life affects us intensely.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
I do not consider myself anything. I just like to paint.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
each work of art should be evaluated by the viewer. if the viewer feels something upon seeing, hearing, reading then the mission has been accomplished. inspiration has been transferred.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
oh God yes. If they do not, they become stale and boring. art is just like life, it is about evolution and growth.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
That question is a hard one because I cannot narrow the answer down. I admire any artist that conveys feelings through images. I admire any artist that does something that inspires me. I am influenced by so many different types of art that there is no way I can answer that question without being longwinded and pedantic. I hate that.
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
I think highly of it. Quality of life is better when people get to experience art, music, and literature.
Is art necessary?
yes. without it there would be no provocation.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
sometimes. Not usually. I can always paint another.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
I hate the thought of being bought. when I create a piece, it is dead to me. I no longer need it and of course you could say that it is very much a part of me, but I would still like to think of it as like hair trimmings or fingernail clippings. pieces of me that are cast off. the castoffs have been purchased but I am still free.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
you don't. you just go with your intuition. sometimes it works sometimes it does not.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
so be it. that is what galleries are for.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
being giant pains in my ass...that I need because I am too scatterbrained to worry about that stuff.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
I do not understand this question. Jobs related to art or just jobs in general?
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy?
see above answer.
Do you personally collect any items?
The items I collect have usually been on a trade basis. Tron Carter, you still owe me a painting.
Which websites do you frequently visit?
I don't.
What advice would you give to those just beginning?
Practice makes perfect. You can teach the hand memory.
