ARCHITECTURE
What is your specialization in architecture?
Residential & Small to Medium Scale Sports Facilities
Is there a web page or blog where one could see something of your work?
website www.architectsaustralia.com.au blog architectsaustralia.blogspot.com twitter koorbarch
What is it for you a good architectural design?
Good architecture is answering a clients brief clearly, and cleanly without compromising elements of light, ventilation, orientation and proportion.
What era of architecture most fascinates you?
Now & Art Deco
List the name of a famous building which you don't care for.
Federation Square - Melbourne
What hardware and software do you use that you deem as indispensable?
No hardware/ software is indispensable, hopefully that role belongs to the architect.
In which city do you live or work and why?
Brisbane, it is my home town, I am surrounded by friends and family and the lifestyle is hard to match anywhere in the world.
Do you work with other architects? How is the team set up?
2 other architects are in our office, My father being one of them.
What do you think of competitions? What types of competitions do you normally compete in?
Competitions are hardwork and can sometimes open great debates about Intellectual Property issues, however I also believe they can act as a great resource for new ideas and styles to be investigated. As a small firm we do not have mant resources to lend to competition entries, so we tend to enter competitions where work we have already designed for clients can be showcased.
Which architects, past or present, do you admire?
Ito Gehry Frank Lloyd Wright
In your professional philosophy, what comes first, function or form?
Function otherwise we are artists only.
Do you view suburban sprawl as an ecological threat and a waste of resources? Do you advocate for more vertical and denser town planning?
Denser town planning is definelty important and cost efficient on infrastructure and resources, however I also believe in Australia where we have large expanses of under-utilized landscape that new suburbs could exist with higher importance put on susatainable principles and a balance could be reached.
What will the single-family home of 2050 be like?
Not much different to what we have now, although I beleive it may be transportable and will be off grid for electricity, have its own water harvesting & require minimal external imput.
For you, which new materials provoke the most interest?
Translucent Concrete
Bioclimactic architecture, domotic systems...do you think we are approaching a profound revolution in architecture?
No - I think we are returning to what we have always known.
In the development of a project, do you feel closer to the client or to the public as a whole who will use the final product?
Public user - if you don't feel the space and understand why it exists then you will produce architecture that is not efficient for anyone, be it commercial space, residential or any other type.
The pharahons built pyramids, and bankers skyscrapers: will architecture always be a symbol of power?
Yes it is mans' way of creating something larger than him that may outlast him.
Can one copy and still be original?
No - A past collegue once said to me you will never produce anything original, only recombinations - I believe Gehry produced something new with the Guggenheim, and Zaha is creating a style which I have not ever seen as a whole before...they may have been influenced but they did not copy...and I do not see any reason to copy...
Spectacular architecture: do you believe that buildings are becoming more and more media phenomena?
Yes, I beleive we are in the age of the image, but we always must remember we are also in the age of photoshop and the airbrush.
What motto would you like to see inscribed at the entrance of the university's department of architecture?
Let your imagination lead you, but walk with your feet on the pavement.
What would be your dream project at this moment?
A church for all religions.
Who is your favourite artist?
Richard Serra
Which websites about architecture do you frequently visit?
Too many to answer, but I usually start with a google random word image search, and work from there...there is too much information out there to only be inspired by other architecture...I also recieve over 10 newsletter a day from industry affiliates.
