Interview with:Carrie Schechter - Photographer [carrieschechter]
PHOTOGRAPHY
 | Do you have an online gallery where one can view your photos? |
 | For how long have you done photography? How did you begin? since I can remember – my mom always gave me toy cameras as an infant and they’ve been in my hands ever since. I didn’t choose it as a way of life until a few years ago. |
 | What has been your education as a photographer? I paint and sculpt among many other things. In the beginning I taught myself a lot of it. I went to the School of Visual Arts for a few years for fine art and computer graphics, unsure of the path I wanted to take - I took off, had some more adventures & I figured my heart out, shooting all the while. I landed at the Brooks Institute of Photography, worked as a studio manager and producer to pay my school bills & learned the biz side of things. But honestly its life experience that really taught me how to see. |

Serbin Communications |
 | What is your favourite type of photography? Music, Celebrity and Fashion is what I love to shoot. |
 | What do you try to express through your photography? My imagery is how I communicate with the world - it’s my voice. Light tells half the story, the shadows tell the rest. |
 | How do you choose your subjects? It depends on what I’m shooting, clients and I go through castings, if it’s a personal shoot; I cast & when it’s a celeb or a band it’s a no-brainer. |
 | What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session? There's tons & tons of prep, from technical to creative. A client isn’t going to hand you the budget and tell you to wing it. The most important thing is the clients vision and giving them exactly what they need, sometimes that requires a few days of prep sometimes weeks. It’s all relative to the job; nothing follows the same recipe every time. |
 | Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow? I do both – no matter how structured something is – there’s always magic that happens and you expect the unexpected. Everyone on set is confident in my skills & we have a lot of fun. I think big, and I can deliver big.
The bottom line is always my clients and what works for them, all that matters is that they get better than the best I can give. |
 | Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma, Olympus, Sony, Pentax...which do you place your bets on and why? I’m a Canon and Hassleblad girl – the sound of a Hassleblad shutter is beyond sexy to me. Their equipment stands the test of time and the quality is always top notch.
I’m also madly in love with Profoto lights, and I do love to break out my 4x5 when I can. For fun I’m all Holga’s and Lomo’s, & for computers I’m Mac all the way. |
 | What measures do you take to protect your work against Internet piracy? All my work is copyrighted with the US Copyright Office; I have syndicators, lawyers, and other agencies that keep a watchful eye on the world. |
 | Are you a good salesperson of your work? In what should you improve? I’m a very good salesperson – everyone has things they could improve upon, I just can’t think of anything right now. |
 | Which past masters of photography do you most admire? There are so many of them that are incredible. I'm also extremely inspired by painters, and all other kinds of art forms. Mostly my over active imagination keeps my on my toes. |
 | Are technology and digital retouching reducing the gap between professionals and amateurs? Maybe, but its easy to spot an amateur. I don’t really worry about it – there are a billion clients out there for everyone, the only thing I have the power to effect is myself and my career so that’s where my focus stays. |
 | What is your team of habitual collaborators like? My team is top notch in their field. They are talented, perfectionists, happy, positive people that have the drive of champions. I surround myself with only the best, and that’s what I get every time. I love them, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. |
 | With which other photographers do you normally team up with or do sessions with? I don’t work with any other photographers, but I know enough of them to form a small country, they are all amazing people and we have lots of fun together- it’s a privilege to be able to live in “photo-country” with them |
 | Do you consider yourself more technical or more artistic? I'm technically artistic and artistically technical. |
 | How does one develop the instinct of knowing when to press the shutter release button? The same that someone knows when to breath and when your heart should beat. You just do it. |
 | Which websites for photographers do you frequently visit? |
 | Is there any particular technique that you could share? learn the business. |
