Interview with:Charlotte Axworthy [charlotteaxworthy]
ILLUSTRATION
What is your specialty in illustration? I usually work with an ink pen and Adobe. My work is mainly editorial ranging from children's books to greeting cards.
What are your regular clients like? What do they expect from you? I love working with my clients, most of which are book authors and graphic designers.
Is there a web address where we can see some of your work?
Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught? I studied a foundation course at Camberwell college of Art & Design (The London Institute), followed by a BA Honours Degree at the University of Brighton.
How did you get your first full assignment? What did it involve? I was still at University when I produced my first few assignments creating illustrated advertisements for local pubs and restaurants.
What past or present day illustrators do you admire most? Roald Dahl, Christopher Corr, Lydia Monks, Ralph Steadman, Lauren Child and many more...
How similar are your current drawings to those you did as a child? Luckily my work has evolved since my childhood! lol. However I do still love looking at old drawings and seeing what quirky details and colours I chose to put in my compositions at that age.
What was your favorite comic book as a child? I remember spending many hours looking at Richard Scary's detailed books when I was really young, my love for comic books and graphic novels developed later in teenagehood.
Do you have a particular style, or does it vary a lot? I have been told I have a definite style... colourful, funky and bold.
What is hardest to draw? Novelty can be hard, but I always welcome the challenge of drawing something new.
| What type of music do you listen to while you work? Music is a huge part of world, it inspires me and sets the mood and pace for my work.
I guess I mostly listen to an ecclectic mix of chilled tracks when working. |
Do you have a favorite work of art? It's difficult to chose... The great ones like Picasso, Matisse and Basquiat produced some of my favourite pieces.
What do you do when a client simply says "I don't like it"? It's tough but I always encourage an open conversation with clients so we can reach a satisfactory result.
What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately? Adobe illustrator and photoshop
What part of your work do you do on paper and what part digitally? I sketch in pen and ink, then scan my drawings in and colour them in with photoshop. I also like collecting and scanning patterns and textures to digitally collage in my work.
What research do you do for your illustrations? Although most of my work is created from my imagination, I would be lost without the internet or library when I need to research references.
Do you have colleagues with whom you share techniques, tricks, ideas, etc.? yes, a few friends I went to uni with and other illustrators I know
Do you have any specific goals as an illustrator? Yes of course, I'd like to write and illustrate a few more kid's books and get them published. I'd also like to gain more work in the editorial field.
What illustration web sites do you frequent? I love to surf and browse... too many to quote
What are you working on now? I'm currently working on designing greeting cards and on my exhibition which starts next week!
| What advice do you have for someone who likes to draw and would like to make a living from it? Work hard, draw, network and believe in yourself. Good luck!
