Interview with:

Chelsea Kirchoff [chelseakirchoff]

ILLUSTRATION
What is your specialty in illustration?
Paper cut outs and mixed media, but I'm a sucker for good ol fashioned drawing.
Is there a web address where we can see some of your work?
I update my blog every single day with something new; whether it be a sketch, my finished work, or something that inspires me. Check it out: http://chelseakirchoffillustration.blogspot.com
Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught?
I went to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan where I received my BFA in illustration.
What past or present day illustrators do you admire most?
I find myself always inspired and admiring the work of everyone because I can't do what everyone else does and vice versa. However, top favorites would have to be (in no particular order): Gary Taxali, S. Britt, Piven, Red Nose Studio, Lane Smith, Derek Yaniger, Esao Andrews, Dave McKean, Allan Sanders, and so many more. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I always find someone new to look up to when I look in books or magazines. It's great.
Do you have a particular style, or does it vary a lot?
I think that everyone always has a style regardless of how you do it. I'd say my style is pretty consistent, but my technique isn't. It's also hard to gauge that based on the fact that I look at my work all the time, but I like to keep it fun.
What type of music do you listen to while you work?
I like to keep the music eclectic. Party shuffle is a good thing on itunes, but the music just becomes background noise once I really get into my work.
What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately?
I've been doing a lot of collage type work and experimenting with a variety of techniques. I think I'm starting to settle on the collage/cut paper route. It's the most fun for me.
Do you have any specific goals as an illustrator?
I would love to do spot illustrations for Rolling Stone, create seasonal characters for Target, or illustrate children's books. However, I suppose my goals are to make money doing what I love.
