Interview with:

chris keegan [chriskeegan]

ILLUSTRATION
What is your specialty in illustration?
I do computer rendered photomontage illustration.
Is there a web address where we can see some of your work?
Yes www.chriskeegan.co.uk And i have an etsy site selling prints and what not www.chriskeegan.etsy.com
Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught?
I studied at Chelsea then Camberwell college of art.
How similar are your current drawings to those you did as a child?
I would like to think that my doodles are a bit better these days.
What was your favorite comic book as a child?
I bet many people say this its Tank Girl.
What is hardest to draw?
Drawing from my mind is the hardest for me. If its there in front of me its no problem. Doodling or drawing from the top of you head is discouraged at art college but i think its can be really helpful in relation to being creative and thinking up new ideas. But it defiantly helps to be able to draw well in the first place.
What do you do when a client simply says "I don't like it"?
Take it on the chin. You can never expect to hit the nail on the head each and every time you create a piece of work. If they don't like it, ask why and you may learn something about your work. Good constructive criticism can be very helpful. If they don't want to tell you over the phone then asking them to put it in an email can work this will give you time to think about why they don't like it and thus what you could do better. You are never gonna get a bulls-eye every time.
What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately?
Really getting into screen-printing at the moment.
What part of your work do you do on paper and what part digitally?
Most of the time i start to try to come up with a few half ideas or anything in my sketchbook. Using coloured pens. If the idea looks good and is drawn well this tells me maybe i should take the idea a bit farther.
What advice do you have for someone who likes to draw and would like to make a living from it?
Work at it. Like getting proficient at anything you need to put the hours in. There is alot of self motivation involve with freelance illustration. If you cant motivate yourself nobody will be able to.
