Interview with:

Da Grym Reefer [dagrymreefer]

MUSIC
What do you do? What is your musical specialty?
I try to learn as much as I can about everything. There are no know-it-alls in the music business so there is always something new to learn. I am mostly known as a rap-artist and a producer.
Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with?
I work alone as an artist but I have a closely knit relationship with my label-mates at Posse Up Entertainment. Dr. Gigglez AKA Dock G, my wife Miss Joyce, King Chiefa, J.A.E. Ra'Show, & Yung Ra along with a few others.
Is there a web address where one can listen, see, or read some of your work?
I can be found on plenty websites. The OFFICIAL ones are www.dagrymreefer.com www.thebudchamber.com www.nightfunlive.com and www.posseup4life.com I could also be found on www.soundunwound.com....just Google me and something will bound to pop up.
Please list any awards, competitions, or other acknowledgments you would like to mention.
I was nominated in a few categories in a regional award ceremony known as the JMAs...other than that I've been featured in www.soulessencemagazine.com April 2011 issue (the magazines first issue).
Please list discography in which you have participated.
My first release was called "Live"......From H8erville (The Suic-Psychosis E.P.) which hasn't been released for some time.... I usually count Volume 0: Phukk U (2 All Who Doubt) as my first release and Da Nickel E.P. as my second.... I've also participated in most of the Posse Up Entertainment catalog.
How did you begin making music? Who introduced you?
My older brother got me into wanting to make music when I was a young teen. It wasn't until I graduated high school and hooked up with Dr. Gigglez before I got to record.
What was your musical education?
My mom bought me an acoustic guitar when I was 5. I was trying to teach myself to play that before I took piano lessons briefly when I was about 7 or 8 but I've mostly played by ear...
When did you realise that making music could be a way of life for you?
I always felt it...as far as I can remember. I've always had a message for the world....if they are ready to listen.
What is your creative process?
I don't know...and if I knew...I wouldn't tell.....People copy too much.
When do you have your most lucid moments, in the morning or night?
In my music I've had most of my great ideas come to me in the middle of the night...but creativity can hit any time of day
Have you ever awoken with a melody created from your dreams?
I produced maybe my most prolific song awaken from my sleep: Death Wish 2. Making this beat was like a fever dream to me...I don't remember how I did it but I know it was an emotionally driven experience.......
How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
I know a song is finished when I can't hear anything else that it needs....If I feel chills or shed tears I know I have a masterpiece. In most cases I can hear something that I want to add almost instantly.
How did you discover your creative territory? How would you describe it?
I'm still discovering it because I'm still evolving as an artist...I'm still discovering what people love about my music and who loves it. But where I am now comes from just being myself... I'm just trying to create my own lane.
What part of your job is your least favourite?
The bullshit.... People are always trying to pull one over on you. Sometimes you have to come out your bag and be mean...if you have a problem with being shrewd or "mean" from time to time....this is not the business for you because it's a necessity in this business.
How often do you practice?
As mush as possible...
How do you feel right before going out on stage?
*smiles*
What should be done to stop piracy?
Start SELLING albums again!!!! The mixtape is killing the album! It's overused and it cheapens the value of everyones music. Artists are releasing mixtapes that sound better than their album...and if your mixtape is FREE "Guess what?" They are going to just download your FREE mixtape...and say screw your album. I feel the mixtape BOOSTED piracy....
What type of music do you detest?
Music that has no content that cannot be related to...music that depicts a completely falsified lifestyle. Music that add to the overall influx of ignorance in the world....by that definition it's a lot of music that I detest...
What time did you get up this morning?
I don't remember....everyday consists of late nights and early morning.
How do you sell yourself? What has been your experience with record companies and representatives?
I sell myself to a fan-base. I'm not too concerned with the record company reps.
What other things have you done to make a living?
Worked LOL
Have you ever played on the street or in the subway? How much did you collect each day?
I sold CDs by hand throughout my career I've made up to $100 in one day when we were selling out first CD "Roastin-N-Toastin"
Who would you play with, without a doubt?
Initially Nas & Damien Marley.... If I played guitar George Clinton, Piano Stevie Wonder.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the business?
Before you start just making songs....LEARN THE BUSINESS PART FIRST....AND HANDLE IT!!!! Handle the business early in your career or the business will handle you in the end.
