Interview with:emeson [emeson]
MUSIC
 | What do you do? What is your musical specialty? Primarily I'm a singer-songwriter. I remix, produce and stumble my way around a few instruments that include keys and bass guitar. |
 | Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with? I do both. I started out in a group now defunct some years back called Lifesize.
I release solo material and currently write songs and perform as lead vocalist for the group The One.
Group members of The One include Joe Ryan (drummer, keyboardist, vocals), Sam Ryan (guitarist, vocals), Curtis Weir (keyboardist, vocals) and Pete Harvard (drummer). |
 | Is there a web address where one can listen, see, or read some of your work? |
 | Please list any awards, competitions, or other acknowledgments you would like to mention. I've been honoured with the opportunity to work with some fine musicians over the years.
Major highlights include reworking and remixing material by jazz musician Chico Hamilton, Peter Gabriel and The Chemical Brothers.
Also working with lounge lizard Yamasaki and one of Spain's finest producers, Karmasound. |
 | Please list discography in which you have participated. I'm currently working on the new album and there's an album due from The One before that.

 | How did you begin making music? Who introduced you? My father introduced me to the world of vinyl. My cousin fueled the fire and I became a DJ before branching into the world of actually making music.
I was told that I sang well and it was suggested by friends that I take it further. |
 | What was your musical education? Listening to some of the most amazing music from all over the globe via my father's record player, one breathing cassette tape by Tonya De Brett and teaching myself everything else. |
 | When did you realise that making music could be a way of life for you? From the first day I saw the reaction of the crowd to my first vocal stint. |
 | What is your creative process? I 'hear' the music first, then the hook will come to me in the strangest of places.
I believe it to be a gift and treat it as such.
I don't force the issues or shortchange myself just to get it done.
Having said that, I try and allow enough time for deadlines! lol |
 | When do you have your most lucid moments, in the morning or night? To be honest anytime can trigger an episode, so to speak.
I just make sure I'm ready to record it as it is or it's never the same later. |
 | Have you ever awoken with a melody created from your dreams? I've had instances where pretty much the whole song seemed to 'appear' to me.
This is why I treat it as a gift. |
 | How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes? I think when I've said all I need to say lyrically and musically on it.
But that's the beauty of live performances; you can change and adapt the song each time. |
 | What part of your job is your least favourite? Troubleshooting!
When things aren't going to plan and you feel like walking away, there's normally a great song at the end of it all. |
 | How often do you practice? I write and play on most days but sing every day. |
 | How do you feel right before going out on stage? I get butterflies, some nerves too. I like that because it keeps me focused on the show. |
 | Which musicians or groups have been inspiring to your career? There have been so many for so many different reasons, but here are just a few.
Bobby Caldwell
Kraftwerk
Steely Dan
Curtis Mayfield
Loose Ends
Players Association
Teena Marie |
 | List three songs that are key to your life. Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
Pressing On - Vanessa Bell Armstrong
Go For It - Kleeer |
 | What type of music do you detest? I don't detest music as opposed to a distinct lack of creativity within some forms that claim to be music. |
 | What time did you get up this morning? 6am. |
 | How do you sell yourself? What has been your experience with record companies and representatives? I market my material on the best sites that we can source.
We run an independent label called 24thcenturyrecords.com.
The experience is a well told one, but it galvanises me whenever it's been less than positive. |
 | What other things have you done to make a living? I've worked in shops and behind the scenes online for companies. |
 | Have you ever played on the street or in the subway? How much did you collect each day? No I haven't. |
 | Who would you play with, without a doubt? I'd have to believe in the idea or project.
You have to stand by your craft, regardless of who you work with. |
 | What advice would you give to someone starting out in the business? Be nice, be professional.
Keep pushing on and let people know that you've got something that's really worth it.
Never talk your stuff or a show down.
If there's only a few people at your show, perform like you're at Madison Square Garden or Carnegie Hall always. |
