Interview with:

Emil [emil]

DESIGN
What is your specialty?
My specialty is Fashion Illustration & Fashion Design in the areas of Women's Couture, Bridal & Evening Wear.
Where can we view your portfolio online?
My portfolio can be viewed at www.styleportfolios.com/emiles1978
What made you interested in design?
I have been interested in design because form an early age I have been creative with drawing and designing and took art classes to strenghten my skills.
What has been your professional career path?
My career path has been one of many valuable experiences. I started off working as a stylist for a television soap opera to assisting in couture houses and desiging prints for women's sport wear companies and teaching art. I have learned something about most everything that I do even though my dream would be to steadily work in high fashion design in a contemporary womens clothing label because I consider have excellent taste in clothing.
Have you received any awards for your work in the field of design?
Yes, I have recieved several awards for my work. My first award was first place winner in men's wear design in 2000, as a fashion student. My second was for a hispanic design competition that got me grand prize winner in all of the United States entries and got interviews with important hispanic shows & media. Following that, I also got the coveted Dare to Design your Future award in women's wear category at the FIT in New York City that same year and also represented U.S.A. at the Air France Fashion Show in Paris. At graduation I was awarded most accomplished student of the year at the senior fashion show.
What is your motivation? What makes you get up in the mornings?
My only motivation is to get up and be able to sketch garment designs & make them a reality.
How would you define your design style?
I believe my style is still in the modling process. However, I tend to be most of the time very classic but with a modern twist. Think Oscar de La Renta meets Prada.
How do you promote and move your work?
I mostly move my work through recommendation and by posting my work on-line.
Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
The shape is usually the first concept I percieve when working on a design. However it always narrows down to the element of the body type & persons sense of style and lifestyle that define color, shape & fabrics.
What are your sources for documentation and to generate ideas?
To generate ideas I mostly look into old movies, old magazines & runway shows to see what other designers are doing and then that gives me a better sense of direction. As well, looking at trend forecast services helps alot to bring my designs to date with the rest of the industry.
Which festivals or awards in your field do you find most interesting?
New York Fashion Week is probably the event that I most consider important.
What is your favourite type of customer?
I dont really have a favorite type. As a designer I have learned to be open to people from different walks of life and to be able to give something unique to them. However, if you ask me what would be my dream customer, it would be someone who would not be afraid of being different.
To a certain point, is copying justifiable?
The industry I work in is like reverse osmosis system. It is a community of artists & designers that think alike and so using others as inspiration is valid but not to the point of being a copy cat like the knock off companies. There is a big divide between looking into someone else for inspiration than say imitating that idea for less as is commonly seen today.
List some things you dislike seeing in design.
I think i dislike when some designers try to over do it with excess. I think design should be about those who consume it to enjoy it and finding a balance is probably the best thing one can do.
Do you believe the newer generations are better at designing?
Not necessarily. Young designers can be very talented because of either genetic or having been raised around other creative persons. However, the majority today have only interest in brining attention to themselves rather than doing what the old shcool desigers did which is focusing on the customer rather than being in the light for fame or attention. If you can make a good living doing what you love and giving your customers what they like...you dont need the rest.....those are just additional things the industry offers.
With which type of client would you decline in working for?
Maybe someone who wants fast, pretty & cheap!
Which professionals in your field -contemporary or past- do you most admire?
There are so many I admire from a professional point of view. A couple good examples would be Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta & Carolina Herrera. There are more.
Which software applications do you most utilize in your work?
Adobe Photosop & Illustrator
Up to what point do your designs reflect your personality?
I think each design has something to say about who designed it. It varies in every project.
If you weren't a designer, what would you be doing?
If i werent a designer I would definitely be running a trendy restaurant.
At this moment, what would be your dream job or project?
My ultimate dream would be to work as a fashion illustrator & technical designer for a contemporary women's wear designer.
Can you see yourself in this field twenty years from now?
I can see myself doing this eternally.
Which design resources online do you frequently visit?
style.com, wwd.com, vogue, new york times fashion & style, pantone, promostyl.
