What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I normally use an assistant, makeupartist, and stylist as a team for fashionshoots. But the team varies.
I have most recently sent away images for retouching.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
depends on what kind of work, on location, studio work, portrait or fashion.
I consult with my client, meet with stylist and makeupartist and create a concept and also location scout for a finished look.
What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I try to do everything I am capable of doing for myself, by myself. I enjoy casting. I don't have a set crew yet--I always use different hair stylists and makeup artists. I do all of the production and post-production work myself, and I recruit people I know well to assist.
Declaration: With what person or business would you like to work?
I would love to work in the film industry, specifically in the special effects field. Ideally I would like to work in the horror genre, but I know I can learn so much from each genre. There are many amazing directors, makeup artists and actors I would sell my soul to work with.
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I am a multimedia artist; I work in makeup, painting, photography, video, ceramics, and multimedia sculpture.
Besides advising clients, do you also educate them?
YES, http://www.focusonstyle.com is all about educating yourself to understand how to be in control of your own style- do it yourself stylist in a way.
I spent a lot of time as a stylist on photo shoots- 15 years- and prepping, propping, and faking skinny, young (and not so young) tall girls who were born extremely photogenic to look amazing in a photograph, along with an expert team of a hairstylist (always love Gad Cohen), makeup artist (Brad Boles and I go way back) , photographer, art director, my fabulous assistants (Miss J. Alexander, Phillip Bloch, Michael Alan Stein, Veronika Ming, JoAnne MacFarlane) for schelpping & prepping & being creative & making me laugh, and those clothes that I brought, all to make this string bean girl–who knows how to twist her body to look more amazing– really look to die for! Oh yeah, and then there is a retoucher to make it all appear even more perfect.
That’s not life- that’s fantasy. But by implementing the professional tricks used to create that fantasy, anyone, everyone can look more beautiful, in THEIR life. That’s what I try to do at FocusOnStyle.com by sharing my insider tips and tricks to help make the most of what you’ve got.
As a photography fashion stylist for a cornucopia of clients for over 15 years, Sharon enhanced the look of magazine covers/pages, catalogs, advertisements, commercials, industrials, and visual imaging. Her score of styling accounts included Ladies Home Journal, Vogue Mexico, Us Magazine, Live! With Regis And Kathie Lee, A Current Affair, Avon, Macy’s, Sigred Olsen, Candies, Le Tigre, Perry Ellis, Pepsi Cola, VF Corporation (Basset Walker, Hathaway, Lollipops, Lee Jeans, Skeets, and Cottonworks), Gantos Department Stores, Bamberger’s, GTE, BMG Music, IBM, Manufacturer’s Hanover Trust, RJ Reynolds, Lady Manhattan, Oleg Cassini Suits and Night, Evan-Picone, Merona, In Fashion Magazine, Gunnar, Zoom, American Photographer, Soap Opera Weekly, and others .
And then there were the celebrities who were born without the benefit of having gargantuan proportions to fit a sample size but instead had egos to match the length of an average model’s legs and then some. Actually, some were very sweet but way shorter than a sample size and a plethora of styling and fit issues.
As a stylist, besides styling fashion models, I dressed people of different sizes and shapes including, here, on the set with basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain.
Sharon had the pleasure of starting her career as a fashion expert by dressing some pretty famous bodies as a fashion stylist on photo shoots, including Rebecca Romijn, Kelly Ripa, Famke Jansen, Elle MacPherson, Wilt Chamberlin, Tracee Ellis Ross, Debbie Gibson, Willow Bay, Kyra Sedgwick, Sally Kirkland, Judy Tenuta, Kathleen Kinmont, Tim Robbins, Jonathan Silverman, Miss USA contestants, soap stars, models, and more.
What importance has professional training had on your career?

What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...?
Hair Stylist and Makeup Artist.
Do you have employees or people that you outsource tasks to? What do they do?
I do not have full-time employees. I have part-time help and lots of freelance vendors, whom I hire for photo-shoots. The artists include photographers, models, wardrobe/prop stylists, hair/makeup artists, location scouts, animal trainers, retouchers and more.
What is your profession? What is your title printed on your business card?
I am a professional makeup artist.
What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I'll bring an assistant at times to help with lighting if needed & it's great having a makeup artist when possible.
What people or experiences have taught you the most and helped you to arrive where you are?
Three experiences that have taught me the most are my high school years, working at Chanel as their resident makeup artist, and my mother. Going to a military boarding school taught me independence, self-motivation, and discipline, among other essential values.
My time with Chanel introduced me to a world of fashion and fantasy! There, I encountered a diversity of personalities that helped shape my professionalism. Last, but not least, my late, loving mother who gave me knowledge, courage, strength, love and support. The fight against her cancer we fought together. Even though she's gone, her legacy and the bond we shared continues to give strength and know she would be so proud of me today.
How did you begin to develop your talent? Have you possesed it since you were a child?
I discovered my love & passion for makeup/fashion when I was 13. I became the unofficial hair/makeup artist in my military high school, New York Military Academy for proms, winter formals, and drama club.
What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...?
I am a makeup artist for fashion, beauty, editorial, TV and more!!
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
I spend days casting the perfect team for a photoshoot. First I think of an idea, then find a model, makeup artist, hair stylist, clothing designer if I need one, a location to shoot. Just before a shoot though I just make sure all my camera and flash batteries are charged and all my equipment is in my little camera bag.
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
Am a professional makeup artiste.
What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...?
Image. I am a makeup artist. I help accentuate your BEST features and mask your less flattering ones.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
I do extensive research on the subject before the shoot.I have a pre production meeting with my team to discuss the plan.God is in the details and nothing is left to chance.Iam fortunate enough to have a good team of Makeup artists, stylists, assistants, retouch artists etc.,At the end of the day its a team effort.
When did you first realize you could make a living this way?
During the recent presidential election, when I read how much Sarah Palin's makeup artist was being paid, I was like "This is totally happening".
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something of your work or of where you work.
http://www.youtube.com/user/MisterMakeupArtist
What has been your professional career path?
I grew up on stage and local tv, then as an adult I worked in the music business and had a long and happy run as a makeup artist and stylist. As much as I loved painting faces it was always my secret wish to be a jewelry designer, so eight years ago on a dare and a prayer I traded in my brushes for pliers. I am self-taught as a designer, but I studied the jewelry business for close to three years as an intern/employee for a gemstone and bead supplier.
What hobbies have you got?
My number one is traveling....
What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I'm usually a one woman team! I do all the casting, styling, makeup, hair, production and post production on my shoots. Sometimes a model will bring some clothes and do their hair and makeup themselves, but apart from that it's just me.
I've used hair and makeup artists in the past and have never really been very happy with the results; I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and when it comes to my personal work I have a very specific way I want things done. I'm contemplating putting together a team for collaborations and client work though.
What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I always have a makeup artist
Which professionals in your field -contemporary or past- do you most admire?
Kandee Johnson is probably my favorite professional makeup artist.
What has been your professional career path?
I eventually wanna become a makeup artist after I'm done with school and stuff.
What is your specialty? Production, direction, something else?
I'm a SFX makeup artist / writer.
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
What do I do? Hmm, complicated question. I am a stylist, denim designer, makeup artist, creative director. Basicaly, I am an artist (self proclaimed as we all are). I just love to produce works of art however that may be that people can admire. With styling and makeup I can help someone to feel great, with producing photo shoots I can express my point of view. Currently I am focusing on a series of photoshoots using non professional models. Just your average everyday girls and boys. The point is to show beauty of all natures, I want to prove that the beauty we see in the media is not the holy grail. We don't have to look at these photos as something better than what we see in the mirror. My models are just as glamorous as any you see on the cover of Vogue. I promise.
With which other photographers do you normally team up with or do sessions with?
I get to know as many photographers as possible. In fact, I curate a blog called "Okie Photogs" at http://www.okiecreative.com/ where I give Oklahoman photographers a place to be seen and heard from. Me and my photographer friends used to go "photocycling" (riding our bikes around the city and breaking into buildings and the like), and I've been fortunate to be a teacher. So, community is important to me.
But when it comes to creative collaboration with other photographers, I like to talk shop, but when I'm on the set, I have to be the boss :) I often collaborate with my subjects, who are often artists regarding ideas and concepts, as well as makeup artists, costumers, actors, painters, and musicians, and designers.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
Depends. The sessions that are about being natural, capturing life, etc are usually only preceded by a conversation getting to know my subjects and getting a feel for who I am really photographing. For the sessions that require a lot of preparation, I first sit down with the artistic director, concept designers, etc and we flesh out what we want to see. I make a file in my head of all the things I personally need to focus on fulfilling in the photos and prioritize those. Of course I line up the makeup/hair, set assistants, lighting needed, models etc and work out all financial details beforehand.
Do you usually attended seminars or coursework to advance your professional work or would you consider yourself a more self-taught person?
Yes I attend hair shows, fashion shows etc. to advance my skill but I still consider myself a self-taught makeup artist
What is expected of you in your job, and how do you accomplish it?
As a professional makeup artist/image consultant I believe my clients expect me to be professional, on time, and creative. I accomplish these by ensuring my clients are satisfied by all means possible.
What did you study and why did you choose to study that field?
Yes I studied Cosmetology for 2 years before I went into full time work as a Retail Makeup Artist for 4 years before going onto freelance artistry.
What is your profession? What is your title printed on your business card?
Professional Makeup Artist/Image Consultant
What advice would you give to someone who wishes to begin a blog?
Go for it! It's an amazing, empowering experience. Even if you're just blogging about your day-to-day activities, your opinions on random, silly things, or even just bizarre encounters you have...do it! Everyone has something to offer, everyone has an area of expertise, be it makeup artistry, fashion, sports, politics, or how to make button-holes...and if you're really passionate about it, all the better! Don't question yourself, don't second-guess yourself...just get in there and share what's in your head.
What is your team of habitual collaborators like?
I usually work with:
Models
Stylist
Makeup Artists
Hair Stylists
Photography Assistants
Runners
Light Technicians
Photoshop Specialists
etc
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
Kevyn Aucoin. He believed in the same values of makeup artistry that I do. That there is not any 1 way or any 1 product that must be used. To continually expand your knowledge and to be free with that you want to create.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Technology has been a great way for me to share what i know! I'm now regularly filming video tutorials of both makeup and coloring and uploading them to youtube so i can share the knowledge i have with everyone! (youtube channel is makeupartistkatie)
Your biography in four lines.
I've been a makeup artist for 10 years. I adore everything there is to makeup!
After the birth of my first child, i needed a creative outlet to do at home, that didnt require a model, actor, etc. So i started paper crafting.
Since then i started my own stamp company and teach certified copic classes.
