What was it that made you create your blog? On what date did you start it?

I started blogging in 2009 primarily because of the release of the Open Government Memo by President Obama, but also because of some family issues that I wanted to share with a broader audience since I did not know how to resolve them alone. I initially viewed it as a forum for expressing my own challenges in the language of OpenGov, leveraging the processes and tools that were available to me at the time and the magnetizing effect of social media to attract solutions. I think it was this personal touch that made it so popular; it's not simply a dry record of laws, documents and software, but rather a timeline showing the snowball effect of my words and posts on others with similar issues and interests. In addition, there is something unexpected about my conclusions, which often counter long held beliefs deeply ingrained in the consciousness of Americans over decades and across generations. The fact that it has become a valuable resource to the international OpenGov community is thrilling to me, with the new resources (docs, youtubes, s/w, etc.) that are being produced surpassing the originals. I add new links and media as they become available, so that the content remains fresh and timely. My blog is a constant work-in-progress, and the new posts are largely spontaneous and unplanned, and are based on what I feel is the most compelling issue or story of the day.

What is your blog address? What subjects do you deal with?

http://dad-memorial.blogspot.com. I blog about Open Government and legislative reform in general. I have focused primarily on the newly formed Congressional Anti-Bullying Caucus (CABC) recently as I feel that this is perhaps the most significant Caucus in Congress today.

My post exposes weaknesses in the current system that protects victims of bullying in the schools, workplace and elder communities. The mission statement of the Caucus is very broad and could include other aspects such as domestic violence and child abuse, subjects I know less about. I will post new information on my log here at Whohub as it becomes available.

The mass appeal of mobile devices and social media is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, public events and public offices are "opening up" and becoming more interactive and engaging. On the other hand, people are becoming more robotic, less emotional and connected in an interpersonal/face-to-face way. Bullying is on the rise partially because cyberbullying makes it easy and impersonal.

In the United States, government departments and agencies are top heavy because of a broken system that protects renegade managers at any cost. There are many bullies in government today, including the human resources and legal representatives. In many cases, the harassed employees are specialists who are hard to replace, whereas the managers and their reps are not. Identifying bullying supervisors, managers, and HR/legal reps is an important step towards streamlining and cutting costs as budgets are reduced across the board.

Bullying is an international issue, with profound and far-reaching costs to human and civil rights; mental and physical health; and safety and productivity in the workplace, schools, and elder communities.

What blogging system have you adopted and why?

Like most blog on the internet, I use Wordpress.org it's the best, easiest, powerful and open-source system.

How would you define your readers? Have you got a faithful audience?

My visitors come from all over the world, and include many Open Government thought leaders, social media experts, anti-bullying activists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, MTV musicians and many other influential people who can take my words to the next level, and can drive change at a more hands-on level, such as submitting new bills to close loopholes in our laws or to empower or inform vulnerable members of the general public. I'd like to see my visitors from online media change their approach a bit. Rather than reporting the explicit details of violent and non-violent crimes, why not add a paragraph at the end of your posts with links to the specific laws that were breached and resources for the victims? The challenge today is education, and the internet is by far the best forum for that.

What links do you have on the Internet: website, blog, social networks?

We had to rush to build this company "yesterday" when my former employer died. The company closed, and I decided to build Apollosfyre-IDR to take it's place. In the 10 weeks we have nearly completed a website, but it was more important to develop our tools. At this time our only internet presence are my Twitter accounts of @Apollosfyre, @Apollosfyre2, @Fire_SeenWest, @Fire_SeenCntl, and @Fire_SeenEast, and on Google+. In @Apollosfyre I have built a reputation as a source for good information on news events such as wildfire, structure fires, vehicle accidents and other breaking news in Calif, and at times the US. Soon we will open the website at Apollosfyre.com. I am also on LinkedIn, and for a personal account, Facebook.

What brands or companies within your professional environment are you used to recommending with great confidence?

Depends on the buyer - in some cases open source projects, in others specialists like Intralinks, Igloo, Terminal4 - in yet others IT goliaths like Oracle, IBM, HP and Microsoft.

What would be your solution against piracy?

Open source. Make the users pay because they love your masterpiece not because they have to.

As machines for development, what opinion do Macs deserve?

Great machines since they are *nix based. The development world is moving to open source, cloud based solutions based on *nix system at a blistering pace and Mac works with those libraries and platforms easily.

In your opinion, which company helps software developers the most?

The open source community. Ie. no proprietary vendors are good. Perhaps IBM does the most.

What brands or companies within your professional environment are you used to recommending with great confidence?

Unfortunately, I can't think of brands and companies that make things that I recommend with great confidence. I use electronics technology all the time. But they all have pluses and minuses. We all need to weigh these out for ourselves to choose whether we want these things in our lives.

I do overall like the quality of my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. I beat the hell out of it while traveling all over the planet giving workshops, and it keeps working.

The HTC G2 phone I use all the time was easy to root, and it also keeps on working, despite all the beating it gets on my travels. But it is now "obsolete" 'cause it is over a year old, and HTC doesn't support it any more (but the open source, community-driven Cyanogenmod OS does still support it).

Do you feel that analytical and investigative journalism is being lost?

No, not at all . But there's wide spectrum of medium now a days with the emerging of new media that is social media. TV stations and newspapers aren't the only source of information, so to me investigation isn't lost but is used in a more open way.

What professional challenge would you like to undertake at this time?

Tell the world about Secure Delivery Center. We revolutionized open source management - now companies can take charge of existing Eclipse installations for governance, and to create App Stores of their technologies for in-house development. No one else does this, and our existing customers love it.

What is your professional position? What technology do you work with?

We are Eclipse developers best known for the MyEclipse IDE, MobiOne cross-platform mobile app builder and Secure Delivery Center for managing open source. Genuitec is a founding member of the Eclipse Foundation along with IBM, SAP, Intel and others.

What is to come after consumist society?

I do some work with transition towns and also with communities based around WordPress which is an open source publishing platform and TEDx which is an ideas based movement. Transition towns was setup to re think what happens after peak oil and is now much wider in scope.

It seems like communities are becoming more focussed and more global at the same time. The adage - think local - act global is quite real for me and my friends.

Consumerism has alwways been a fraudulent way to live and taking what you need and enjoying simple thngs is much more sustainable. This doesn't mean giving up on the finer things it just means a more thoughtful approach.

How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?

Typically, when it comes to reading an artist’s statement or a curator’s remarks on an artist which is related to an exhibition in a gallery setting, the general public sometimes discovers that the accompanying statement is filled with artspeak, an obscure language that confounds people more than it clarifies how to understand the work behind the artist’s intentions.

Such statements are often laden with historically antecedent references, obscure and foreign philosophical posturing (preferably 19th century French or German), fuliginous wording, and tenebrous and obfuscating expression (the terms Zeitgeist, transcendent, and dialogic are used a lot) and loaded with excessively verbose ideas in order to sound cerebrally profound. (This last sentence is a perfect example of “artspeak”). In truth, it’s all just convoluted fluff!

I prefer to keep it much simpler.

My mixed media drawings and paintings result from interpreting randomly selected pieces of text torn from old, discarded books.

Many years ago I acquired a large number of used, hard-covered books for a special art project. Afterwards, I began using these books and their words as a source of inspiration for my drawings and paintings. I still do. The following is an explanation of my working methods.

I begin by taking any book from my collection, opening it, pointing to a page by chance, and then scanning that page for a set of words that says something to me. It could be a series of descriptive adjectives, a partial statement, a single phrase, or a complete sentence. Whatever it is, I respond to the meaning of those words in some way.

Next, I sit and ponder for a while as to why those particular words spoke to me and I allow intuition, spontaneity and my subconscious to guide my thoughts. It is in this state of contemplation that my ideas begin to form. As is the case with all of my mixed media drawings and paintings, this small piece of torn text gets adhered to the surface of the work and becomes the title of each new piece.

This working method is a highly personal enterprise often fraught with uncertainty and doubt, simply because I am never quite sure how others will relate to my intentions and what the work has to offer them personally when they have had contact with it. Once I have unpacked the symbology of the words, I seek out imagery that best describes that context. Usually, I start with an overall concept-image. It can be one image or an array of images. Whatever image or images dominate, this central focus pushes the direction in which all of the other components of the composition will follow. More often than not, my ideas and images are in a constant state of chaotic reassembly. Hence, my work tends to evolve as I create it. I do not do many preliminary drawings or plans for my large scale works because my approach to designing the composition of each new piece is essentially intuitive. When I do prepare plans or make notes, they simply serve as guideposts for ordering and measuring the scale of imagery that I use.

To date, I have been working with a host of signs, symbols and silhouette images that are ambiguous in their visual meaning. This makes each work into a puzzle to be deciphered or solved. At the same time, I will sometimes employ imagery whose direct and literal meaning is so obvious that it cannot be ignored or found confusing.

Accompanying the dominant imagery is a visual parade of simple formal elements: geometric shapes, regular and irregular grids, gestured and scribbled marks, cursively written messages, enumerated line segments, measurements, linear polyhedrons, erasures, repainted or over-painted areas, smudges, and circled and x notations in space – all of which have some meaning but sometimes nothing more profound other than to appear to have significant meaning or substance. They are part of an invented language that I have developed over time. All of this information adds to the visual puzzle that I am presenting to the viewer. If the viewer is inclined, I leave tracks to be followed as traces of my creative thought processes to be discovered and unpacked all the way. This entire build-up of residue is allowed to linger on the surface in relation to the dominant imagery to provide spatial tension, balance, or some other sense of orderly compositional arrangement; because after all, I am still trying to create art that is pleasing to the eye and aesthetically engaging.

Along with these features, most of my mixed media pieces also include a small collaged segment or portion of picture taken from an art history textbook that references the work of another artist. Often I will incorporate some of the color scheme from that segment into my work as a gesture of acknowledgement to those that have preceded me and contributed to the historical continuum of art.

If there is a simple way of describing my overall work in a single, general expression of appearance, I would hope that each work looks as if it came into being through some form of mental plan and enlightenment but compounded by additional and fascinatingly strange imagery that just doesn’t seem to make sense at first glance. Consequently, they should all describe themselves as a melding of conscious action with foolish play, careful design intertwined with chaos and chance, or serendipity blended into well reasoned order.

All of my work is essentially a continuous exercise in self-portraiture since all of my imagery emanates from my biography and life experiences. Even if you fail to discern my personal and direct intentions or message, I hope that you are sufficiently intrigued with my work to look long enough to be somewhat engaged. In other words, I want you to enjoy what you are seeing and I want you to be visually engrossed to the point of appreciating the imagery if only for the fact that your vision has been challenged and your mind has been stimulated.

People who own one or more of my drawings or paintings have told me afterwards that they continue to discover new ways of responding and reacting to my work every time they look at it. They say that they still find it visually intriguing and strangely beautiful and puzzling with each new encounter.

It’s not because the art has changed, I tell them; it‘s because they have.

What brands do you think are on the way out?

Anything to do with Android OS be it smart phones or tablets. Android has failed to deliver a truly open source operating environment for users and the manner in which they treat (cheat) customers is appalling.

Please list web addresses where we can see some of your work

My last major project was http://www.konetic.com and my current project is http://www.controlpoint.eu/

My open source code is spread far and wide but is mainly desktop based.

What should be done to stop piracy?

I believe there should be open source for those who want to share. There must be some kind of hard coding that can be done for those who don't want it.

What do you investigate? What is at the heart of your research?

The biological basis of consciousness.

We have a great storehouse of biological energy inside us, capable of replenishing the brain and reinvigorating the body. However, only recently has interest begun to peak in this energy phenomenon, a physical subsystem capable of activating this energy reserve, known as Kundalini.

A few years ago, clinical trials were held on meditation to discover whether meditation might relieve stress. Doctors, like Herbert Benson, proved the stress reducing benefits of meditation. Where did they get the meditation systems they used in their tests? From Eastern religions and other oriental sources, of course. But how much did they know about these meditation systems? did they know there is much more to meditation than the two-step techniques they acknowledge borrowing from Buddhist and Taoist sources? Do they know about the backward-flowing method, for instance, a part of the Taoist meditation tradition, discussed in The Secret of the Golden Flower.

So if you “borrow” selectively from a source, why not investigate that source’s complete methodology to see what it can do, especially since the benefits of the techniques they failed to investigate go way beyond relief of stress. The techniques they failed to investigate activate Kundalini.

That's what our research is about: Proving that Kundalini opens access to an energy continuum, a dimension of higher consciousness. Proof for the hypothesis — that the energy continuum, a metaphysical plane beyond the scope of present day material science — exists in many anecdotal accounts.

What’s so special about these accounts? Can they lead to scientific validation? Why should we take them seriously?

They occur irrespective of culture, language, geographic, or religious influences. In other words, yes, they are anecdotal in nature, but, at the same time, asynchronous, disconnected in time and space. In fact, so disconnected it would indicate that the subjects (the individuals undergoing the experience) were in no way influenced by others undergoing similar experiences. Similar enough for any serious investigator to keep an open mind about the subject and focus on proving/disproving the existence of this hypothesis — that there is an energy continuum that can be accessed through the proper use of powerful meditation techniques, capable of activating the biological Kundalini energy.

What culinary training have you received? Where have you learned more, in class or by experimenting?

I have many sources of my culinary knowledge. For sure the first attempts appeared after watching for many years how my Mom and grandmother cook. I experimented a lot too - I still do. Then there were cookbooks - the best source of knowledge packed into words. I also got inspired by notes that several of my aunts have. It's amazing to be able to open old, yellow-paged notebook, with many recipes from old times, rewrite them, take home, and then update with my own ideas. Also, there is plenty of food-themed movies. I'm sure that watching others cook/bake with devotion made me want to do that as well. This rule easily can be applied to any other interest.

Does reader feed-back help you?

It is absolutely one of the most wonderful perks about writing. The responses I have received — from all over the world! — to "The Sum of My Parts" and "Au Naturel" have been a constant source of delight for me. Most people are extremely kind and thoughtful. Even if they have criticisms I do try to respond, although I had one guy who wrote some very odd stuff about "Sum" and I didn't even know where to begin in trying to open a dialogue with him. I would say 99 percent of reader feedback is encouraging, uplifting and enriching. Honestly, I wish I got more.

What is your professional background? What were you doing before?

I studied Software Engineering on Vilnius University, but last 4 years I'm building my own startups, so most of the time I'm spending on business side.
Before I have created python consulting company (Nous.lt) and two startups (Toostis.com and Ututi.com). Also I used to be co-founder and President of association "Open Source for Lithuania".

When the coach is confused or lost, where does he/she find a guide? Who is the coach of the coach?

As a coach I have resources available to that support my own growth and development. I have mentors and counselors as well as other experts in differnet business fields that I meet with regularly to expand my own skills, expertise and outlook on different challenges. I essentially become a student and client during these meetings so I can be open to change and new knowledge.

How do you make use of the Internet? Have you already tried all the possibilities that the Net can offer you?

The internet is obviously a very valuable business tool. Businesses have been using the net effectively for at least fifteen years. There was also a pretty clear explosion about five years ago, when people realized the power of Facebook and hopped on the network, which prompted a whole rush of other social media outlets to open up.

I do very well with Twitter. It's a great source for sales leads. And the net offers of plenty of research and communication opportunities, too. I don't think anyone will ever fully exhaust the possibilities related to it.

How do you protect your computer from viruses?

I use anti-virus software in all my computers (including the Macbook Pro), I don't visit nor open stuff from sources I think are suspicious.

As machines for development, what opinion do Macs deserve?

They are OK. One problem is that there are still a lot of open source software that hasn't been ported for Mac, but that is changing.

With which technologies do you normally work?

i use various tools, I can adjust every known Open Source CMS, adapt and develope code in php.
My knowledge in html5, css3 and Jquery is at a high level.

A marketing strategy begins with an idea. How are yours born?

In my career I have seen many good products fail because of lack of resources to market them and bad products raise thanks to their ability to fund advertising campaigns.

With the advent of the internet, smaller companies that carry good products have a chance to open up shop and get found.

How did you begin programming and at what age?

Although most wouldn't consider it true programming, I started writing HTML for web pages in Notepad. This was back in the glory days of AOL, mind you, and I was about 12 of 13 years old.

When the popular computer game Doom became open source, I (along with many young programmers) began to cut my teeth in video game programming.

What machine configuration and operating system do you use?

As an iOS/OS X developer, my primary platform is OS X. As a developer, I also love the underlying UNIX-based platform of OS X as it opens up a whole other world of resources, tools, libraries as so on. Need a library that was made for UNIX? Build it on OS X as a shared library and use it in your iOS app! It's the UNIX underworld.

How do you sell yourself? What has been your experience with record companies and representatives?

We've always kept creative control and copyright, and licensed to independent labels. That has brought its own problems though and it's hard not to be disillusioned when for example your own money gets stolen to pay a labels debts. That's why we're now more open to the idea of majors if they are well run, genuinely love our music and have the ability to push the band to be heard in all the areas we can't reach alone. We've toured extensively and still do but we need promotion and the kind of resources that all pull in the same direction. We want our love of what we do, our individuality and determination of the band to be reflected in the gang assembled around us propelling us forward.

What brands or companies within your professional environment are you used to recommending with great confidence?

Dealings in IT usually turn to brands such as Dell, Cisco, Microsoft and having a good grounding in open source products also helps alot!

How did your professional interest in technology come about?

After my college I develop a lot of interest in computing thereafter I became a lecturer for six years, then I ventured in offering services in technology. I got an opportunity to go abroad and study open-source solution and did my masters as well. That really intensified my interest in technology.

What blogging system have you adopted and why?

I use WordPress, an open source solution that is easy to use and quite powerful.

What has been your professional career path?

I've been working in interior design in San Francisco for the past ten years with such design notables as Kendall Wilkinson and Catherine Macfee, before launching my own consulting company in 2007.  As a consultant I've collaborated with up-and-coming Bay Area designers on the design & renovation of some of San Francisco's most prestigious homes, and in 2009 I developed & launched the design collaborative Designer du Jour.

Trained in the financial, retail, and interior design side of the business, I understand the components of a beautiful interior in addition to what makes a design project successful from implementation to completion.  Beyond the development of the vision of the interior, benchmarks to a successful design collaboration between the designer and client is a deep understanding of what the client’s wants and needs and the ability to manage those on a design, budget, and project management level.  Communication and collaboration are essential, as is the ability to maintain project momentum.

My passion in design lies in making design accessible to the client.  I am a strong proponent of interior design blogs and online resources like 1stdibs.com, One King's Lane, & Pintrest, I love the fusion of DYI and utilization of a designer’s eye to create a signature space that is a product of the client’s tastes and the designer’s expertise.  I believe that incorporating a designer into the decorating of a home should save the client money and costly mistakes, as well as giving the client access to the area’s best artisans and trades people.

After opening my first interior design fabric showroom at age 23, I have deep understanding in fabrics, fabric importing, window covering design and construction, and soft furnishing design and construction.  My other areas of expertise include family friendly design, budget conscious design, and antique importing.  My experience as a buyer and merchandiser for interior design retailers has given me deep wholesale contacts in accessories and home furnishings from the country’s premier manufacturers.  I am often is able to get her client’s home embellishments for a fraction of what they can be found at other retail boutiques around the Bay Area.   When not designing for clients, I continue to work with other interior designers, retailers and creative professionals to help build successful creative business ventures.  I believe that when industry professionals grow and thrive, the industry as a whole becomes healthier and delivers a superior end product to the client.

How has 'having a blog' contributed to your life?

Having a blog has contributed many, many things to my life! It has opened professional doors across the country and allowed me to participate in a large community of people who are trying to better the human resources profession. It has also brought me professional respect and gotten me invited to professional conferences on a press pass. It has also given me the opportunity to write regularly, which I enjoy immensely.

In your opinion, which company helps software developers the most?

A lot of startups are very keen on helping developers. Oracle is the worst while Microsoft seems to be coming back. Overall, open source-based businesses are usually the ones who helps the most (See twitter/facebook/github/10Gen)

Please list web addresses where we can see some of your work

As most of the work I do is in the embedded / private network world, the only way to really see it in action is to rent a room at the Chicago Hilton or the InterContinental Magnificient Mile. In the room you will see a touchscreen computer. Otherwise, for product details, http://www.hcn-inc.com has most of the information.

As for other work, https://github.com/masom is a good spot to go to see my open source stuff.

Aside from work, what other technologies interest you on a personal level?

SEO and open source

How did the entrepreneurial spirit rise up in you? Were you exposed to entrepreneurship in your family or your social environment when you were a child?

In 2002, my husband was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident. After spending months in the hospital, they wanted to discharge him to a Nursing Home. I refused and took him home. For months, I was his family caregiver, bathing him, feeding him, giving him his medicines, making appointments for him and also taking care of the children, the house, the laundry, and more. Our families live out of State and I had no real help to speak of. Needless to say, I was exhausted. After my husband's full recovery, we pulled our resources and expertise together and looked into how we could give back to our community, knowing that we couldn't be the only ones that needed help in a care crisis, yet could find none. In 2004, we opened Visiting Angels where we not only care for seniors, but also adults after surgery or illness and it's our desire to be the best at what we do, not only for the person who needs care, but for the whole family.
