If I look at it the next morning, with some distance, and I still chuckle then I know there's something to the idea. In illustration, it needs to be simple and a "quick read". So, if I get that kind of reaction from the art director, or my wife, or kids, or whoever is at hand, then I'm pretty sure I've solved the problem well.
