The word "fail" has to be understood as "planned failure", or "feigned collapse." Then, one can see the wide-view of a Cold War, where the economic battle made a strategic shift around 1989. The Soviet Union did one of thse "scared goats" tricks, where they just threw in the towel and begged for mercy. Guess what happened next? The USA went in loaning money left and right to the former Iron Curtain countries, which meant the Russians could save for the next phase of the war. Meanwhile, the economic war that so many fools said Ronald Reagan won, is about to become an American bankruptcy. The Soviets tried to bankrupt us, but failed at that in the mid-1980s. Now they have the advantage, especially with the Chinese doing a "masked tag-team wrestling" act on the U.S. Dollar. The situation has almost reached the "Check" state, not far from "Checkmate."
