I teach students of all ages -- from infants who are pre-verbal to senior citizens. The students who are specializing in musical performance range in age from 13 to early 60's. I have an advantage, because my students come to me by choice. There is something that I 'have" that they "want." And so, I put my emphasis on their learning, rather than on my teaching. How can I create the conditions where they can learn what they want or need? I want the student to leave each lesson with a genuine sense of their own new accomplishment. If they know they have created a change or improvement, and know how they did it, they are internally motivated -- "inspired" -- to explore further. My job is to met their needs and expand their possibilities. I think this can be done in any field of study, with any student. |
