Cooperative learning to me involves small, heterogeneous teams, with five people, working together towards a group task. Within this process each group member is individually accountable for part of an outcome that cannot be completed unless the members work together. I like the collective responsibility in cooperative learning which is why I have implemented it into my lesson plans, and teaching philosophy. Cooperative learning provides students with the opportunity to work on their interpersonal skills. I think that the teacher's role is to facilitate and increase students' independence by providing students with skills to apply to their everyday life. Children gain more knowledge and understanding by interacting with their peers. Within the junior and intermediate division we know that students give authority to peer groups, and value their opinions. Cooperative learning allows students to collaborate with others to have a finished product that highlights the need for everybody in the group to be an equal contributor in order to succeed. I believe that cooperative learning is an important component of how I teach.   | | |
