There are thousands of works of art that are every bit as good as the biggies but they've never been shown on any kind of an appreciable scale. So much of art has always been about THE NAME. When people recognize a name, say Van Gogh, they will go to the museum because they want to appear in-the-know. Museums need bodies in order to keep their doors open. Pretty self-explanatory.
