Do you approach an editing session with a clear idea of what you want to do or with an attitude of experimentation?

I know the structure but its always about experimenting too. You find the movie there. You also have to be brutal like an editor is. You can't hold on to footage because you know how much it cost, or how difficult that day was to get the shot. If it does not work for the story, it has to go! An editor also does not get down about the shots they don't have, like a filmmaker does. They cut to tell the story with what they do have. Think like an editor, its more fun. I never FULLY know what I want. But I know a 1000% what I DON'T want.
