You need a Second Unit you can trust and deploy without hesitation. Very important. Getting to that level of relationship can take days, hours, years. It's situational, but, no, I don't want to "in-person" engage with Second Unit's activities, unless it's a very critical shot/sequence requiring more "finesse" than normal. I would, of course, monitor Second Unit's work closely, but from afar, in all cases.
