There are so many things which are called "spirituality". Generally I think its all about human wishes - to be loved, to be safe, to be immortal, to understand the world around. Out of need for all this various supernatural things are invented. It may help psychologically for a while in critical situations but has tendency to linger. Its like an addictive medecine which people start to use even after there is no need for it any more.

Organized fundamentalist religions suffocate free thinking and therefore science too. They are certainly incompatible with science.
