Art in the contemporary western form isn't the most vital of things, no. we can afford to play once we have food, shelter, warmth. I'll gladly see arts funding cut before support for mental health or dissability support. Theres a fundamental creativity though, that IS vital, that exists in us from the very begining. Its much more private and personal: it's the tune we sing to ourselves in the dark or the doodle that a child obsesses over, or the handprint on the rock. That is the basic expression of our being.
