I think the basic ingredients is much like in a painting; there has to be some sort of dynamic tension waiting to be worked out yet still leaving the reader wanting more. For me, the basic ingredient is focusing on what it is that needs to be conveyed. For some, it is an emotion; for others a desire to teach. So I guess the basic ingredient for a story is controlled passion and emotion, to create tension that draws the reader's attention but doesn't waste his or her time. |
