Motivation. Something specific that sets that character apart from all others. What drives him or her from the core of being? Many literary characters were given revenge as motivation, and it's a classic. But a driving urge to protect, a specific fear, a hunger for something else, a desire for justice. The motivations of each character should be plain to the reader, if not to the character or the other characters with whom he or she interacts.
