In the past there was a lot of stigma associated with going to therapy, but now it is rather fashionable. When is and when isn't help from a psychotherapist necessary?

That is in itself a problem. Therapy has its place but when it becomes fashionable it no longer fulfills its purpose. Rather it should become less stigmatised.

A psychotherapist is necessary when the person requiring it feels the need or when a doctor recognises it. When a person feels they can no longer 'cope' or just would like to feel better about themselves and understand what is happening to them.
