A character has to be infilled with emotion. My job as a poet is very similar to my job as an actor in the theatre : I have to discover emotions in myself that match the conditions of the characters, and then struggle from that emotional place to find the lilt and metre that matches that place of feeling. It's an ongoing development of my skill, of course, as I learn from the masters such as Milton, Shakespeare, and the old heathen poets such as the skalds, the writers of the Poetic Edda, and the Beowulf-poet. |
