WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
The first book I can remember loving was called "Fantastic People" by Alan Scott and Michael Scott Rohan. It was a Valentine's present when I was 10 and it was mostly pictures and little short descriptions about ghosts, goblins, vampires and witches. I was always drawn to the fantasy aspect of life, not sure how much of that had to do with being an only child or just being me.
My parents and friends. I started out with poetry, or what I considered poetry, and short stories. One of the short stories I'm planning on making into a novella next year.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
Definitely paranormal, since that is what I write....but I am also a HUGE fan of horror. I'm delving into horror a bit in the Fall of '09 with a zombie anthology!

The best place to learn about my ever changing plans is at... http://dorianwallace.blogspot.com/
I will put excerpts up there and you can find all of my other links as well.
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
HAHAHA, you mean in between chasing the two year old around the house? I write WHENEVER I have a moments peace.
Let's see...I get the older one off to the bus stop, the younger one his drink of choice (juice/milk), dog fed and on the tethered outside, have a smoke before coming in and making a cup of coffee. Then I get the diaper of said small fry changed, day clothes on then breakfast and cartoon or educational program of choice.....THEN I write. The process starts all over again at lunch time before the NAP, (when I do most of my serious writing).
What type of reading inspires you to write?
I read everything from Rabelais to King....but most of my material is taken from life. Write what you know right? I get my best ideas when I'm not looking for them...it sort of like love that way.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story?
Heart, history and personality.
What well known writers do you admire most?
THAT is a broad spectrum! I like Rice,Gaimen, King, Rabelais, O'Henry, Hemmingway, Hill. There are so many more!
What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours?
I find that everyday people under extraordinary circumstances go over well. We all like to imagine ourselves being involved in a wonderful adventure that has some special impact on the world! We may get older, but most of us still hold that magical view.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
NO! I'm not socially awkward, but I have a hard time just stating the facts...I'm a Virgo and I try to over explain EVERYTHING! Either that, or I will speak half in and half out of my head...drives my husband (who is an Aries) nuts!
Deep down inside, who do you write for?
Myself....that may sound selfish, we as authors want to make the reader happy, but if we didn't write for ourselves and hope that others like it, our creativity would be diminished.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force?
Kind of, I think it is in some form or another for most writers. Take my first book, Cold Kiss, if you knew me personally you'd know that Spencer represented some form of my ex husband and Ferrell an aspect of my husband now. We all heal by confronting our daemons on paper if we're not able to confront them in life.
Does reader feed-back help you?
Yes! Before I had my first book published I had a wonderful woman named Tanya from TX test read it....she told me what she liked and what she thought could be improved. It was invaluable to have someone outside of my family and friend circle look it over.
I still owe her a drink one of these days!
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust?
I share story ideas with a trusted few ; other authors who happen to be great friends. Most of my rough drafts are shared with my author liaison, publisher and editor.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for?
HHMMM for a fairly new author that's a hard question. I have my own ideas as to what my voice is, but my voice may not be what readers perceive. I am an eqaulist at heart...for everyone and I hope that, if anything, comes across in my writing. Plus maybe the sarcasm...I am hilarious in person, trust me, you'd be peeing your pants I'm SO funny....again, I hope the sarcasm comes across and is taken in a good light, not mean.
What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?
I'm a Mom, I can barely impose discipline on my boys! All I can do is try my best, write when I can...mostly in between naps, bedtime, laundry, dishes, dinner and cleaning. Night time is the most peaceful and productive.
What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
Wine/ coffee and a closed door....but I don't often get to write in my office :(
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process?
I write on both paper and computer. I love the feel of pen to paper and do that when hubby has control of the computer then type it in later.
What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information?
I am addicted to Facebook and Twitter. I have quite a few social networks I keep up with and that's just for Dorian's persona! I have a few personal pages as well.
What has been your experience with publishers?
I had a few rejections and one very mysterious run around, but once I found Amirapress.com I have had nothing but positive experiences! I am currently working with them and sugarandspicepress.net.
What are you working on now?
LOL! I am working on a short titled Faire for Sugar & Spice as well as a novel titled Cubo. I have approximately eight others including a sequel to my first and second books and a zombie short for an anthology with S&S this Fall.
Again, check my blogspot because the line up shifts.
What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone?
That depends on if it's still a passion...if it is, you wouldn't be asking me that question. If it is your dream, you try until you've hit every brick wall, ask for advice, edit, and try all over again. If it's in you the question need not be asked.
