Interview with:Fay Barlow [faybarlow]

| How do you feel about speaking in front of an audience? What experience have you had in this arena? Years ago, I loved the idea of speaking in front of large crowds. I've always like the theater and acting, so when I began to see how the Lord was working in my life, I had a desire to be in front of an audience, teaching the Word of God.
Since then, I have had opportunities to speak and have found that it is harder than it seems. I still enjoy speaking of what the Lord has given to me, but I find that I am a nervous wreck for the first few minutes or so. As my nerves calm down and I get my breathing under control, I become more comfortable in front of others. And it always helps when the audience is smiling or nodding in agreement with what you are saying. I've yet to find anyone snoozing while I'm speaking! |
| When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? Many things. I've been writing since I was twelve, so writing has always been a part of my dream career. I've wanted to be a singer, an actress, and a professional woman.
I never really stuck with one goal in life. I've always wanted to try different things. I can honestly say that I've accomplished many dreams in my life. They may not be on a scale compared to Hollywood, but they are fulfilled dreams. I've sang in front of a few crowds. I've acted on several occasions. I've worked in the professonal world. And I am now a published author.
The one thing that I never really wanted to be in life was a wife and mother. Those things didn't appeal to me. But I am happy to say that the Lord has changed my heart and I am a happily married wife of almost 16 years with two wonderful, godly boys. |

| What do you do to manage stress? I pray a lot and I practice yoga. |
CREATIVITY
| How and why did you begin to be creative? When I was in elementry school, I was told to write an interesting story for an english class. My teacher gave me a good grade on the paper and wrote that I was very creative. That encouragement spurred me on to more creativity. I began to write poetry when I was twelve and then journal when I was sixteen. (An assignment in High School English) I found that my writings gave me an outlet for expression. I can look back on the times that I have journaled in life and see peace and then the times that I'd not written and see strife. |
| Does spirituality contribute to your creativity? Absolutely! When I read my Bible and meditate on the Word of God, I feel a creativity within. There are times that words will come to me and I can think nor do anything else until I have satisfied my mind and written them down on paper. |
| Declaration: With what person or business would you like to work? I would love to work in the christian film industry. No one in particular. I have written, directed and acted on many occasions, so I would love to continue in that field. |
WRITING
| What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote? I can't remember the first book I read. We didn't have a lot of books in our house. I started writing when I was twelve. I began with poetry and then began writing letters to God. I was able to express myself through words on paper that I couldn't say outloud. I remember letting a friend of mine read one of my poems. I was so nervous about it, but he liked it. That gave me the confidence to continue with my writing. |

| What type of reading inspires you to write? The Bible inspires me to write. I will read a verse, especially in the gospels where Jesus is teaching, then sit quietly and meditate on the verses and imagine what was going on around Jesus as he talked with people. In my head, I see a sort of movie going on. I hear the sounds and see the landscape. This inspires me to fill in the blanks with each person's emotions. |
| What well known writers do you admire most? I didn't grow up reading. The only book we had in our house was the Bible. I did read the Bible but nothing else. We were not encouraged to read in school, so in High School, I found the books we were reading in class to be boring. It wasn't until later in life that I began to read more. Some of my favorite authors are Francine Rivers, Ted Dekker, Donald Miller. |
| Are you equally good at telling stories orally? Not really. I'm terrible at remembering jokes and usually mess them up. If I'm going to tell a story or joke, I try and memorize it first, so I won't completely botch it. |
| Deep down inside, who do you write for? I write for myself, to express internally what I can't always express externally and I also write for God. I write to hopefully bring Praise to Him and His ways. |
| Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force? Writing has always been an outlet for me. It is a form of therapy. As I write down my thoughts and struggles, things become more clear to me.
I find that I write more when I am emotional. Expressions of joy or pain become so overwhelming that I need a way to release them, and writing does that for me. |
| Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust? Yes, I try and share my writings with people that I trust. I also want people who may not agree with my opinions to read my work so I can get a better understanding of their point of view.
I welcome editing and suggestions though sometimes it is hard to swallow. |
| What are you working on now? Right now I am working on a variety of projects. Mainly, I am working on constantly promoting my first published book; Freedom from Myself: One Woman's Diary of God's Unceasing Love.
I have two fiction manuscripts, one complete and one about 90% complete. I also write skits and monologues when requested.
I have recently written a screenplay but am waiting on the Lord to open a door of opportunity. |
PERSONALITY
| If you were sent to a deserted island, which book, CD and film would you take with you? Bible; The David Crowder Band, Remedy; North and South (BBC film) |
| A simple pleasure that for you is quite big or important. Spending time with my family. |
| A bad habit you have overcome. Negitivity. I grew up in a home full of negitivity. That attitude stayed with me for years and spoiled a lot in my life.
Through counseling and the Word of God, (Philippians 4:8) I have learned to break the habit of negitivity and to think more possitive about situations and life in general. |
IDEAS
| Do you think tipping is a good custom? Yes. I was once told that you could tell the character of a man by how much or little he tips. I put this idea to the test when I began dating my husband and I believe the idea to be true. My husband is a wonderful, generous and loving man. And he tips very well! |
