Interview with:Lidija Ivanek [silaart]
ART
 | What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I am an artist who paints with acrylic paint and light.
As a painter I work on any medium that accepts acrylic paint (canvas, wood boards, glass etc.)
As a photographer I use my camera and my laptop with Linux based software. |
 | What is your message? My paintings are talking about my inner life and they are my reflection upon reality through my faith in Jesus Christ. Because of Him I paint.
In my photographs I glorify life that is given to us. |
 | Your biography in four lines. I am a DVM and for 13 years I was working as such. By God's grace I am given the talent for arts only two years ago. From that moment I have painted around 400 paintings and this year I was invited to the Florence Biennial, to Mary Capan's gallery in LA, Street Art festival Zagreb, etc. I had several group exhibitions and 4 solo exhibitions in Croatia (where I live). I won prizes in photo magazines and now I write a column in one Croatian photo magazine (FotoMag). |
 | Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? Yes, I have a web page; www.silaart.com and there you can find links to my daily blogs |
 | How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? For paintings, my inspiration comes from within.
In photography, when I am outdoors, I just know what to shoot with camera. |
 | What role does technology play in your creative process? Little, and it is mostly for photographs. For paintings I only need paint and my fingers and some medium to put the paint on, that's it. |
 | What is art? Ha, ha ... how many well educated people want to give a precise definition on that question?!
:) |
 | When do you get your best ideas? In the early morning when it is quiet and nobody disturbs me |
 | How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? I don't know... I just know |
 | Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created? straw-ball house, solar collector, water mill :) |
 | When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? This year.
Last year I was to much shocked with the fact that I actually can paint. Then I tried to learn and work to improve myself and I didn't have time to think about it. |
 | Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities? I think I understand what you are asking me... it is about sensitivity.
Artists are usually more sensitive about their surroundings and if they do not have a firm anchorage they are drifting on the winds. |
 | Do you consider yourself postmodern? I am a contemporary, modern artist... typical for the era in which we are living |
 | How should a work of art be evaluated? By the heart of a viewer |
 | Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? No.
I grow constantly, so why should I reinvent myself? |
 | Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? Van Gogh, Munch, Edo Murtic, Kandinsky, Dali, Hans Hofmann, Guy Delaroque... |
 | What do you think about public funding for the arts? Nice, but I don't think we have that in my country |
 | Is art necessary? Yes, definitely!
Artists are on the first line to give awareness about good and bad things in society. To record history, to encourage, or to critic etc. |
 | Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? No. I create for people to enjoy. |
 | Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? No one can buy me.
My art is just an expression about one part of me, but I am more complex then that.
People recognize themselves in my art. We connect in that part. |
 | In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? I have the Holy Spirit to guide me and thank God for that. |
 | How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? I am not concerned about that until they decide to put my work there, then by that definition, it must mean that I am dead :))) |
 | What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? I work with galleries and I represent myself. |
 | What types of jobs do you usually do? I am a full time artist. |
 | Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy? All |
 | Do you personally collect any items? No.
I buy photo-books from other photographers that I admire, but occasionally. |
 | Which websites do you frequently visit? |
 | What advice would you give to those just beginning? But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added to you.
