What have you learned about the art of framing and composition?

Whohub

Great framing can make or break a picture.
I am a great believer in the rule of the golden mean, the rule of thirds and
positive and negative space in a picture

Frames go around pictures. This holds true if the picture is on the wall, printed in a book, or on a computer screen. As for pictures hanging on the wall, I think frame shops charge too much money and you can get just as good a frame in a discount store. Mats on the other hand are something entirely different. Frames enhance the room or page, while mats enhance the photograph.

Send it out to the professioanls so I dont have to worry abou it.

Composition or actual picture frames? I began as a picture framer in a gallery and museum.

I dont need to.

Best leave it to the professionals.

To use as little of it as possible.

Be as naughty as you can and brake all the rules you can.

The 3/4 rule does work but I am not averse to breaking it sometimes and placing a subject smack in the middle.

That it needs to be simple to avoid fighting for attention with the photo.

I take this to mean composition.

I believe that less is more until more is better. Like Michelangelo, I think it was, said when asked how he could make such beautiful sculptures from a block of rock, I just look at the rock, see what's in it, and chip away what doesn't belong.

Watch the edges so that unintentional items don't intrude and that there is nothing to draw the viewers attention out of the frame.

It helps like sentence structure does in writing. It helps lead your audience where you want them to go.

The main thing I've learned about composition is that it cannot be taught. You must be in the moment and have the talent to frame on the fly. The only exception to this might be studio work where the image comes to you from the art director and in which you have little input.

If it helps the composition, it's the right framing. The only rule is there is no rule.

It is important to know the rules of composition, and rules are made to be broken.
