Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow?
If I have a purpose I get it out of the way as fast as possible, then the real shooting begins.
All the Portrait Activities are planified, but we have the go with the flow creation switch at on.
I like to start out with a purpose definitely.
If the preparations are done well then I can relax, a direction has been taken and I can flow with that.
I have a general idea in mind at the start of my photo sessions, and once I capture that image I usually push myself to find another point of view.

I start with a plan until I open my camera bag.
If it is an assignment for a client then I start with a purpose and a plan. If it for myself I try to have no plan or a very loose plan and let the shoot take me wherever it takes me. I know that sounds flaky but I get the most interesting surprises that way.

I prepare the subject in advance and make mental sketches prior to the actual shooting, so I pretty much know what I want in an image. If suddenly things don't go as planned or there are circumstances to overcome, I go with the flow and let the door open for sparks.

Generally go with the flow. I do try to embed the emotion or concept into my mind before the shoot to be most open to the best images as I'm shooting.
I usually let go, unless it is something scripted like a commercial assignment.
I set out to achieve certain specific shots, and then grab all the magical things that just happen on their own in the process.
