How do you choose your subjects?
I'm allowed to choose my subjects???
What a great question. My subjects often find me.
Even if I'm photographing models, I tell them that we need to "find the picture." It isn't always automatic. Recently I went to a vintage aircraft show. Even though the aircraft were interesting, I still needed to find the picture.
I ended up shooting the aircraft in the reflections of other aircraft. One would have a chrome nose cone on the propeller, and I could see another airplane in that reflection. I think there's a self portrait, from that shoot, in my portfolio.
From a business standpoint, at this stage in my game anyway, beggars can't be choosers. So I take what comes at me, unless I can see it isn't a good fit. From the standpoint of stock photography, I usually shoot what inspires me at the moment. I'm often inspired by different objects, different photography mediums, different people, who knows. Inspiration comes in many different forms and I find myself happiest shooting that which gives me the shivers when I'm in the moment.
They choose me
I often see the world in moments that I kind of capture in my mind which generate a feeling, if I like it I will try to recreate it, so I choose them according to my minds eye.
Research via the internet, and reliance on the NGO's I work with in India. For my commercial work, obviously the client chooses those.
Typically they choose me! But my favorite model is my daughter Rachel. She is amazing in front of the camera.
They usually choose me when it's a free exchange. Usually, though, I shoot whoever I am told to.
But I'd love to shoot more famous people we assume we know and show them how I see them. Who am I and who cares?
But I digress and state an untruth: I don't really see anything. My camera does and then I look and see. I think therefore I see.
I don't, the moment just happens. I just have to keep my eyes open to see it.
For the most part, I think that my "subjects" choose me.
They choose me....
I don't, they usually choose me.
Based on what I see in any given moment. Often, they are people I am close to that I capture in unguarded moments. They are immune to the camera since it is omnipresent.
they usually choose me
