What is your criteria in determining which projects you select?
The contract - the writing & the part have to interest me.
I work on instinct and then I ask myself does this character, film, role and people creating the project fall in line with what I believe in and what I want to explore as a creative artist. It's the people I work with and the vibe I feel.
The material has to be about something worth saying,
and/or which is genuinely entertaining for the audience.
But when it comes to TV, I'm a realist. We all need the work, and
providing I don't find it offensive or demeaning to me or the audience I'll
do it.
The writing, the diretor, if I can learn anything from the project or if it's a character unlike any others I have played.
I am really lucky as I am able to choose my projects on a purely creative basis and so the play, style and character usually play a large part in my decision. The other reason I end up working on the projects I do, is because I want to work with the company or a specific person involved. In the past I have worked on jobs for the money but they tend to make me unhappy and completely unfulfilled creatively and so I’d rather teach which I also thoroughly enjoy.
At this stage in my career i can't be fussy!
Sadly I can't usually be selective in terms of artistic merit! The biggest governing factor is usually can I afford to take the job and still pay the rent or still be able to work on the side...
Money - I have strong views on this. I am a professional actor - that means i earn my living from it. The promise of a showreel or a mention in the programme doesn't pay the rent. I suppose it's okay when you first start out if you need the exposure - but don't do too much of it or thats what people will expect
Again, having only just started my career I tend to take whichever projects I can get! There are a few obvious criteria, e.g. no gratutious nudity, nothing dangerous, etc, but I'm not at the stage where I can afford to be too picky!
That depends on how my career is going at the time. There are times when you'll take pretty much whatever you are offered because you need to work. If things are in a better stage then it's usually to do with liking the project and the character. If it's something I relate to, or something that I think has an important message, or is interesting, or even just something that seems like it will be fun. If it involves a director or actor that I like or respect then that can definately sway me too.
Gainful employment
Mainly whether I think I'll learn something or/and whether I think I'll have fun.
Over the years and through experience that has obviously chopped and changed. I have sometimes accepted work that I wouldnt "normally" do just because I wanted to work! But,after making some bad choices Ive now made the conscious desicion to be very selective in order to keep my integrity and soul intact!
Of course I consider the play, the part, the director, the company and their methods of working along with who else will be working on the project. Basically I no longer just dive in without doing my research and knowing what Im getting into!
Acting in film projects. Is all one acting jobs, It all the same, Projects can be a hit or miss Its down to luck, In determining which projects you select.
The more interesting the character, the better! |
