ACTING
At what stage in your career did you realise that acting could be something you do professionally?
I always knew that acting was a profession, but I think it was after a few classes in college that I realized I might be able to do it professionally. I definitely wasn't the worst actor in class, and I knew enough about marketing myself that it seemed like a viable option.
Only this year, and it was completely out of the blue. I got involved with a Theatre of the Oppressed project purely out of interest and was given a role in a play, 'Til Death Do Us Part, about domestic abuse. As the play developed, the director and producer began to book workshops with groups affected by domestic abuse and sought grant funding for the work. Before I knew it, I was being paid for the work I had become involved with purely out of interest as a hobby.
The first time I did Shakespeare when I was 19. Prior to that I had always thought I would end up doing Musical Theatre rather than straight acting.
When I realized acting was something I could do professionally was when i started taking acting classes. The feed back I got from my teacher was so good that I knew I had raw talent that needed to be polished and trained. So i continued acting classes and eventually started going on auditions.
I knew it right from the beginning, which is the main reason why I began the classes.
when they paid me to do it,..... =)
I think in high school it kind of solidified for me that it was what I wanted to do. I knew it was a really far-fetched profession in many ways but I also knew that I probably wouldn't be happy doing anything else. That's a big motivator.
When I had to pick a major in college and had no desire to give up acting. Also when I started watching movies and critiquing the performances and comparing my abilities to theirs.
After the world of radio started to become less fun I found my way into voice-over acting full-time. I wish I had come to that realization sooner.
There was a long time between the time I began acting and realising I could do professionally. I contacted people who model and act in my golf club, then I realised: "oou, why didn't I do the same, why didn't I begin to act professionally?"
The moment I walked on stage as a little girl, I felt alive and invincible!
