What advice would give to someone who wants to join the ranks of advertising?
Don't ask for advice
Do it because you love it. If you are not passionate about it, you won't do well or fit in culturally. Develop a thick skin, remain open to new ideas, and give every project your best. Treat everyday as an opportunity to have the next big idea. Seek out creative samples from around the globe, to keep up on what's being done, and how advertising is creating impact in new ways.
BE ON YOUR GAME. STICK TO YOUR WORD. BELIEVE IN YOUR GRIND, BUT MOST OF ALL YOURSELF.
To read a lot, to surf the web and to watch television. Then, going to ad school. And starting at an agency as soon as possible.
Ask me if you don't understand, I will teach u and never give up stay study.
Please think it through again.... as it'll certainly be a life-long, one-sided, love-hate relationship - much like owning a Blackberry ;)
Study hard. Work harder. Leave your ego at the door. Feed your brain daily. Laugh a lot. Be honest.
This industry can be extremely rewarding if you are willing to work hard, keep an open mind and continuously challenge yourself and others to reach a new level of excellence. You must always be open to learning new things and building upon both your successes and your failures. Be proud of what you do and never de-value your work to others, but don't ever let your ego get in the way of becoming better. And finally, embrace being a dork.
Get wedded to your work.
recognise how hard it is to get in so be prepared to be persistent. And to recognise that getting in is not about brilliance but socialisation - being the kind of person that others want to work with.
As I have mentioned I'm at the production end of the chain - my advice would be to intern in different departments/companies and see what interests you unless you already have an idea.
- Work hard until it bleeds.
- Become informed, learn from the work that inspires you and understand why.
- Don't be scared to try something different.
Go into marketing and avoid advertising. Too much effort, too less results.
Thing big. Think breakthrough. Remember that people buy on impulse and emotion.
If you can, intern in a great agency.
Just read and be curious :)
