How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
I am almost never certain. I make continue to make changes as I feel them. Except once a piece is recorded and reproduced. Then I have to let it go.
Yes. They almost always can be improved.
I think songs can always be added to if I listen to them enough. But usually I know when its finished when it sounds good to me "through someone else's ears." This doesnt mean what someone else thinks about it, its that I can listen to it with someone else in the room and feel like every element of the song is exactly the way it should be.
you dont ever have a finished product, that is why you need someone other than yourself to help with thw project.
Music is Perfect, and Not Perfect All at once. You know It needs no more chnages when you achieve a feeling of completeness.
No song is ever perfect, but yes, I know when to say "enough is enough, that'll do!"
I don't.
One thing you learn from being in the studio is that your instincts can only take you so far. What you might consider to be an awesome complete song, may be incomplete to someone else. We normally finish a song to our satisfaction and let our producer have a listen. He'll give us creative criticism, and we'll make changes based upon those comments.
A song is generally finished once it's been recorded, until than, there is always room to make changes and improvements.
When I can listen to it without spotting even a minor flaw or detail that I want changed. And when the whole band is very satisfied with it and says "yeahhh that's fuckin brutal!!!" lol.
I don't do songs.
When it flows I guess. Songs are never really finished, many times they continually evolve through performance.
When I find myself humming it at random forgetting thats its something i worked on!
A song is never finished.
When it sounds nice. :)
I am pretty sure a piece is NEVER done. Even if the composition falls into place there is always another arrangement or setting that can and probably will come from it.
I stop changing a piece temporarily when the performers need the music to practice for the performance.
when the harmony, the letter and groove are complemented musically...
It has to sound very well! |
