How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?

Whohub

when the song ends, it's over

It's that musicians intuition, if you're genuine with your music then it just comes to you.

I always try to NEVER over think a song. One can change a song many, many times over if they continue to over analyze it. So most of my lyrics, and the musicians that I work with know that usually only subtle changes are made.

When i'm finishing a song, i make a final demo-master on the computer.... Then i'm listening to it, again and again..... When i then takes a break from the music, and later goes back, then i can hear if it's right, or if it needs changes..... And then i goes back to the project, and make changes, and again, i make a demo-master..... I use much time to listen to my own projects, so i can hear if it's good enough for my ears..... Also by hear it on different speakers..... Until it's right where it should be....

After many hours of listening to it!!

Feelings of completion of the message. Never too long!

If it takes more than 15 minutes to start feeling it throw it out. You just know.

When you can improvise...
improvisation can give the illusion of being a composed work, with well- crafted melodies...

when i can enjoy it while i close my eyes

yes inmediatelly

The answer is, I really don't know. There are many thing I'd like to change on my old songs, there's thousands of things I'd like to change, but never do. I always seem to put things off.

Even when I think a song is finished I may listen to it for awhile then make more changes .For the most part I know what I expect of a song before I record it. The song usually comes out the way I want it or I stumble on to better ideas as I move forward with recording.

It's finished often when I run to the end of the (last) page. My measures get smaller and smaller.
Changes can be made 20 years later. But nothing major. I usually am satisfied with the integrity of the work. I have to trust that I basically knew why I did something, because I usually don't write a line without a reason.

When the final mixdown is complete and it's released to the world.

when I'm satisfied and comfortable with the way it goes.
