How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?

Whohub

There is a defining moment when you save it to mp3 format to play in your car, then you think well actually that needs to change. The ability to stop is just as important as the ability to start.

it has to sound the same way, every single listen...not just the sound, it has to give me THAT feeling, thee same feeling every single listen. if there's any interruptions during the listen, any distractions from that flow in my ear, we need to correct something, add something, or take away something. its a feel.

I know a song is finished once I fully write it out, record it, then listen to everything before I mix it down. If I feel I need something extra on the song, I'll record that before I mix it down. Once I mix a song down, its pretty much finished, besides mastering it,

I just keep adding different elements until I dont hear anything else on the record.

It's easy to keep working on something and to never really be happy with it so you just need to know when to stop, there's no real rule that dictates when a song is finished though. It's harder when you're recording because you've got all these ideas that you want to try out but the song could end up sounding like a horrible, overproduced and incoherent mess. On the plus side, it's easy to drop parts in and out to see what works best together.

AFTER I LISTEN TO THE SONG A COUPLE TIMES

When I'm happy & satisfied with what I've made. If I know that it's not finished I'll work on it until I'm completely satisfied with it.

It just feels right and full and rich or beautifully bare.

You know by how you feel when you hear it! I mean i don't decide on when its finished thats Luke and Alex jobs as producers. But when i hear a complete track if it makes me wanna dance and makes me smile then for me its complete! If your unsure get feed back from friends and family!

Wen My Hearing Tells me

When I hear it over and over in my car after recording it.

Does that point ever get reached I wonder. There comes a point when you just have to leave it alone...

I just somehow feel it and I know if somethings missing bacause I can hear it while I play and then I just add it in. Like if im thinking of a song in my. Head I will fond out a way to play it on piano and make it into a song.

I really don't think any song is finished. Every song is a draft and every song could be tweaked to be made better but to me the overall goal is a get a song made to your liking.

I'll know it when I feel a indescribable satisfaction deep in my heart & when I can sing it out loud without a miss of the lyrics I wrote!!!
