How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
I play jazz, it always can be changed!
When I look at it the next day and am still as excited about it as when I first wrote it...
When the body feels balanced whilst playing- all chakras intact and working out haha..That goes for every memebrr of the band! altogether...
When I feel that I have exhausted my current knowledge.
You never 'know' when a song or piece is finished, I don't think anything is ever truly finished. There's always something I could tweak in the mix, or a bar I'm not happy with, but unfortunately with such tight deadlines often a piece is 'finished' purely because there is no more time! I think I'm a bit of a perfectionist!
When I feel as though tinkering with it no longer improves it.
When it feels right.. To me, a song can always change, I can see all the alternatives.. But I have to settle..
If it starts sounding too busy or crowded, take out the last thing you did, and it's finished.
You ask people you trust. I don't know how you can know on your own.
I find it difficult to be objective about my own material or parts i have written. That's what the other members of a group or a producer is for. I am acutely aware however of trying not to overcomplicate an arrangement as i believe the best tunes stand on their own, it is easy to over colour the picture and lose track of what it actually is underneath.
I don't! I'm forever changing music I write.
That's a tricky question. When I've recorded a tune I can spend a few hours listening to it & think it's doesn't need anymore but then I'll find something wrong with it a day or week later.
