How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
I don't! I'm forever changing music I write.
That's a tricky question. When I've recorded a tune I can spend a few hours listening to it & think it's doesn't need anymore but then I'll find something wrong with it a day or week later.

Its just 'that feeling'
as a producer you have to learn when to stand back from your own songs and know when to stop! I made the mistake for years of over producing...adding track after track of guitars when one or two would have sufficed..but at the same time...its great to have input from the guys about the mixes....I`ve never had to add, but I usually findf after going back to a mix fresh, i can make it much more dynamic by reducing the amount in it.
If the crowd loves you tune it's done. If not, more hard work is needed.

I don't know if a song could ever really be finished - songs and music seem to evolve over time and even 'established songs' like 'Georgia' can go to some amazing places when the right musicians get together and play.
When it no longer makes me cringe.
When it evokes the image (a scene, landscape, etc) or feeling I need it to create.
Yes, it's gut feeling, either that or the pubs open.
It feels complete. I might try and add something, but it will feel wrong if it's finished. I like to simplify songs anyway.
When I finish a song, I'm usually pretty happy with it and can never think of ways to add or change them because I've been composing them for days or weeks. So when the band want to add or change stuff, at first I'm always a bit dubious and protective, but I usually agree with their suggestions in the end! |
