I think every musician poet has had THAT happen. I ALWAYS keep a notebook and pen by my bed for that reason! as a matter of fact, I have a notebook and pen in EVERY ROOM in my house because of that reason! you never know WHEN you're going to get something.

Only very occasionally with a melody... Quite often with lyrics, though...
No, although I've done some pretty strange things, like taking a melody and listening to it backwards and then re-harmonizing it or like... y'know how a song usually has something in it that forms the bedrock or the basis of everything else, sometimes it helps to try to start from somewhere I'm not familiar with, or use a new instrument or something. Or learn a piece that was written for one sort of instrument but then use something completely different to play it. Or dice up that piece of music like the layers of an onion and use several different sounds to play that one single part. It's always a process of layering and adding new flavors...
On the other hand, yes I do keep a journal of dreams/nightmares and sometimes the imagery or the stories or the plots that the subconscious mind creates, that hold over to the conscious mind... sometimes that sort of thing provides inspiration for a lyric or something.
Quite often, that's probably how I have written my best stuff. |
