There really isnt one answer. Sometimes I hear an entire beat in my head and I go to the studio and make it happen. Sometimes its an oldie or somethin and I love the song so much I go reinvent it! Then theres times where I dont think I just go for it and leave to the skill. Then as far as writing, I stopped doing that some 8 years ago. I just let the music make my words for me now. Its more real for me because I think too hard so to avoid it I just use my heart ya dig.
Generally it's whatever tends to pop in my head at times. I don't try to push it, because I find I get writers block trying to write songs, but when I'm going through something or feeling something towards a situation or a person. I get more inspiration. Alot of it comes from driving around, and thinking, or listening to another song.
I first choose repertoire that "speaks" to me. Then it's a process of conquering, polishing and maintaining. Analysis of the work comes quite early on in the process.
It has changed over the years. It used to be a lot of writing. It used to involve the beatbox-- old school. Lmao. It now includes mostly a lot of rewriting, recording, mixing and recording. I always write down new ideas somewhere. the ideas I am meant to use will keep coming back until the song is really good.
It is the music that triggers images; then I write. I wish that I could do the opposite approach i.e. from text and set to music, but I am not a composer.
