What advice would you give to someone who wishes to begin a blog?
Learn everything you can about blogging and apply what you learn everyday. Daily action and consistency is the key to creating a successful blog. Also I highly recommend the Challenge that starts on July 1, 2010
Ask yourself if you are blogging to attract business via Google or if you want to have people visit you as part of an online community.
Do you want to make money or just have fun.
I haven't read Gary Vaynerchuck's book, Crush It but it sounds like a good one for beginners. http://crushitbook.com/
I personally hate blogs that are soley designed to make the author look good. He or she cannot stand criticism and becomes afraid of debate.
If you don't want to argue on your blog close the comments, that's okay by me, but don't ban people who criticize you even in strong (not vulgar terms). That is disgusting.
If you put your best foot forward and try to hide the other foot you are a shallow phony and it shows.
Cliche alert: Just start writing. You'll enjoy it. I personally find blogs with a specific subject matter to be more interesting and that's the route I went. But if you just want to tell your buddies what a jerk your boss is, go for it. (Actually, I'd keep that in a more private forum..) The technology involved may seem intimidating at first, but it's designed to be extremely user-friendly.
Think carefully about what you wish to blog about; be true to yourself; explore all the possibilities; set aside enough time to blog regularly; carry a notebook with you at all times and use it!
Just do it! And work hard to create your own original content.
1. Don't force it. Be inspired.
The first blog I tried to start failed miserably (that is, after only two days), simply because I kept on wanting to post just for the sake of posting. Nowadays I blog when I'm inspired to blog.
2. Edit, edit, edit.
No good blog comes in the form of oMG liKe TAT's so KEWL. Or Today I to this amazing place I found...
Essentially, blog with your style and personality but maintain proper grammar and spelling please. The rest are a pain to read (= no one wants to read it then).
3. Enjoy.
You have to enjoy blogging to have a good blog. It should never be a chore. Oh, and have fun!
Do it! :)
it's a fun experience. there are some bloggers who are not as welcoming and friendly, but for each one of those, there are thousands that are!!
do not feel you MUST post each day. don't feel guilty if you do not post... if you feel something is half hearted and "just because", skip it that day.
Relax and do not worry about being a wiz.
Just do it! There's no wrong way because it is primarily for you. Just be honest and just be yourself. If people want to read you, they will. If nobody reads you, it becomes cathartic.
Make sure you have the time to commit to writing on a regular basis. I see a lot of people start blogging and quit only a few months later because they fail to realize what a time suck it can be. I recommend setting out a schedule of when you need to post articles to help you stay on track. Try to think of ideas for posts in advance...writer's block is no fun at all. Also, be original and don't steal content! If you like what someone else is doing, ask if you can link their material, but do your own thing. Blogging is very personal, just make it yours.
Focus on something you are passionate about. Sure, it is great if you are a specialist on the subject, but passion trumps knowledge. If you love the subject you will learn what you need to know to engage your audience.
I would recommend them to use wordpress.com which is an application easy to use and create posts as much as pages in order to see articles individually also.
I would advice them to update their blogs regularly so people can read something new at each of their visits.

Write about things you are interested in. Write often. Write well. Get the word out, particularly among other bloggers. Once your readership grows, you will be bitten by the bug.
Just do it! Start as a guest or student answering questions, give an opinion. As soon as you notice some appreciation find a subject you know enough about, think of a nice title, eventually a nickname if you need the privacy and write a story.
Start! Too many people worry about how best to blog and the simple truth is you just need to get going. Build it and they will come!
Once you start, be consistent - the search engines will learn if you blog say, every Monday and so will your readers.
Illustrate your blogs - readers respond better to those with pictures.
Reciprocate comments. Respond to those both on your own blog and visit the blogs of those who have commented and repay the compliment. |
