|What advice would you give to someone who wishes to begin a blog?
To blog about your passions, blog in the style that you yourself would like to read, be original, work hard and don't expect miracles overnight.
Just go do it!
Read Bryan Allain's ebook 31 days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo. From page one it challenges you to establish at the outset what your blog is for. This will enable you to channel your content accordingly.
Post whatever the heck you want so long as it's not seriously offensive. If it's porn, please tag your porn posts accordingly so as to give a fair warning to your followers. Don't be that person who sends hateful messages to others because bullying is just wrong. It does no good to anyone. Also, make sure to give credit where credit is due when posting certain things. And I think that's it. Sorry if this wasn't very informative for you. I just really suck at giving advice.
Pick a subject your really passionate about and keep up with it as often as you can.
Focus on what you want to write about and have fun. If you build an audience, great, but do it for yourself, first.
Do it, you won't regret it. Don't sweat getting followers, do it for you.
Don't start unless you are really passionate about your topic and are willing to commit to turning out a quality product on a regular basis. There are already enough poorly written, sporadic blogs out there. But if you really have the passion, write for yourself, and don't worry about followers.
Also, understand copyright laws and don't "borrow" without giving credit.
Go for it - but try and get your blog syndicated and listed with the big Blog Directories and also go for Guest Blogging - it seems a good way to get visibility.
I found it slow going to start with, but after I ran a second blog (http://40in4weeks.blogspot.com/) which I posted to daily, this helped a lot by just getting into the habit of writing. So my advice would be to start with an idea, try and post regularly, but don't be afraid of trying something new if the first idea isn't working as well as you'd like.
Find your voice. You can't be all things to everyone, so narrow down your focus so your audience can find you.
Be prepared to devote time to it and network with other bloggers.
Oddly enough I have written about that already so I will just refer you to that article: http://www.helium.com/items/2238659-how-to-become-a-prolific-blogger
Dive in. Just let your mind roam free. It's fun, and it can also be great therapy.
I get asked this question often, and my answer is always another question: WHY do you want to start a blog? Do you enjoy writing? Are you passionate about a particular subject? What do you expect to achieve with your blog?
No one should write a blog unless they know why they want to do it, and what they expect to get out of it. When they answer those questions - they'll know how to start.
