How do you distinguish passing fads from mainstays in new trends?
I never follow trends or Fads, I keep to the beat of my own drummer. I try to stay with colors that are always timeless and classic then add a splash of season color to keep it fresh
Eveything in fashion depends on customer, your design to become a fad or a trend is only decided by customers.
Comfort zone, current interests, climate,... makes them a fad or a new trend
go with my gut and what I love
IT SHOULD BE SEEN I THEIR DESIGN.
Do not do anything that is trendy always stear a client away from superficiality.
I always ask myself if I would wear that particular piece once, or many times over the coming years. Most fads are quickly phased out, so I look for longevity.
Fashion moves in a circle, what was popular 10-20 years ago will be coming back in style.
By watching the current trends and knowing the past trends.....
I believe that strong trends evolve. Passing fads are here today, gone tomorrow and are always brought back at a later time. A mainstay in new trend or original concept will always be predominant over a recycled idea.

innovation. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish passing fads from mainstay trends. An over-the-top element of the absurd is sometimes a hint. Too much of that and it is not mass-marketable.
I have no idea, I just use my design intuition.
By looking back at classic design and keeping current by reading magazines and blogs, being able to differentiate between fads and the classics becomes second nature.
As a designer, I have to distinguish form and function. Not form from function.
The children's market often follows the adult market. It's a passing fad when it stops selling. You never know who thought skulls and cross bones would last this long. As long as Pirates of the Caribbean makes money...
